When you compare
- Some literature papers ask you to compare two poems (an anthology poem with another, or two unseen poems), or to compare ideas across two texts.
- Comparison develops relevant similarities and differences in ideas and methods. Both texts need meaningful attention across the answer, but neither identical word counts nor both texts in every paragraph are compulsory.
A link needs a meaningful difference
Planning a comparison
- Choose a number of developed connections suited to the question and time. A theme, a contrast in perspective or a structural development may organise the response.
- For each connection, select evidence from both texts and explain the relationship. The order is flexible: a paragraph may integrate both, or focused sections may build explicit links. No universal point/evidence/analysis sequence is required.
Planning follows the question
Comparative language
- Similarity: "similarly", "likewise", "both poets...", "equally". Difference: "whereas", "in contrast", "however", "on the other hand", "unlike".
- Connectives signal a relationship but cannot create one without explanation. Separate sections can work when the comparison is developed; two independent essays joined by a token closing line are less effective.
Two workable paragraph arrangements
What to compare
- Ideas and attitudes belong first to the text’s speakers and situations, not automatically to the poet’s private beliefs. Compare language, form, structure and their supported effects.
- Use accurate context when it explains a relevant choice and the task assesses it. Do not invent unseen biography. Balance means sufficient treatment of both texts, not mechanically equal space.
Tips
- A concise overview and concluding judgement can help organise the answer. Their value comes from answering the question and drawing together supported comparisons, not from meeting a mandatory introduction/conclusion template.
