Lektionsnotizen

Holiday destinations and accommodation

  • Use complete destination phrases: je vais en France/en Espagne, au Canada, aux États-Unis and à Paris. Feminine countries normally use en; many singular vowel-initial names do too, including masculine Iran. Masculine consonant-initial examples such as Canada use au and plural États-Unis uses aux. Established country/island exceptions mean a gender slogan is not enough for every place.
  • À la mer, à la montagne and à la campagne describe holiday settings. La mer, la mère and le maire can sound alike but mean sea, mother and mayor. Read spelling and article alongside context rather than deciding meaning from sound alone.

Transport

  • Learn transport chunks: en avion, en train, en voiture, en bateau, en car, à pied and à vélo. En car means by coach and en voiture by car. À pied keeps pied singular. Other constructions such as par train can occur, so these examples are useful chunks rather than proof that every alternative is impossible.
  • Un billet is a ticket; un aller simple a one-way ticket and un aller-retour a return/round-trip ticket. Le départ means departure, l’arrivée arrival and le quai a platform in the railway context. En retard means late/delayed; annulé means cancelled, which is not the same travel status.

Booking

  • Je voudrais réserver une chambre pour deux personnes means I would like to book a room for two people. Avez-vous une chambre libre ? asks about availability, not a room without charge. C’est combien par nuit ? asks how much it costs per night; Quel est le prix par nuit ? is another suitable form.
  • Le petit-déjeuner est compris means breakfast is included in the stated offer. Non compris or il n’est pas compris reverses the information. Compris agrees with the included noun where applicable, as in une taxe comprise. Read exactly what is included rather than assuming the whole booking or all extras are free.

Activities

  • Use an activity in a sentence: j’aime nager, je visite un musée, je fais une randonnée and j’achète des souvenirs. Se reposer means rest and changes its reflexive pronoun with the subject: je me repose, nous nous reposons. Bronzer means tan/sunbathe and is taught as vocabulary rather than health advice.
  • Combine an activity with a reason or opinion that matches your meaning, for example j’aime visiter des musées parce que c’est intéressant. Choose singular/plural forms appropriately and distinguish the place from the activity. Other accurate activities are acceptable in open writing; the lesson does not require a particular kind of holiday.

Use an activity in a sentence

Use an activity in a sentenceFrench exampleMeaningJ’aime nager.I like swimming.Je fais une randonnée.I go for a hike.Je me repose.I rest.J’achète des souvenirs.I buy souvenirs.

Past holiday: perfect tense

  • The passé composé uses a present auxiliary and past participle: j’ai visité, nous avons mangé, elle est allée and nous sommes arrivés. In this active être verb group, agree the participle with the subject: allé/allée/allés/allées. For je, choose agreement appropriate to the speaker rather than assuming only masculine is correct.
  • Do not claim all movement verbs take être: marcher and voyager normally use avoir, and constructions of verbs such as monter can change auxiliary. Reflexive verbs use être but participle agreement follows additional rules, so it is not always automatic agreement with the subject. Focus on the named active examples here; in nous avons visité le musée, visité does not simply gain s because nous is plural.

Future plans

  • Aller in the present plus an infinitive expresses an intended future: l’année prochaine, je vais aller en Italie. The second aller stays infinitive. J’irai is the simple future of aller and can also express a future journey, with an appropriate destination phrase.
  • Je voudrais visiter Rome is conditional wording for a wish or polite request: I would like to visit Rome. It is not the same as I visited or I have booked. Time phrases such as hier, l’année dernière and l’année prochaine help interpretation but must fit the intended tense and message.

Problems

  • J’ai perdu mon passeport reports a completed event; la chambre était sale and il pleuvait describe past state/background. Weather can also use a completed perspective, such as il a plu, so imperfect is not compulsory merely because the topic is weather. Select tense for the meaning you wish to communicate.
  • Le vol a été annulé means the flight was cancelled; en retard means delayed. A polite request such as Excusez-moi, pourriez-vous m’aider ? asks for help. The lesson teaches language, not a guaranteed practical solution to a travel problem; read the details and avoid inventing a reason not given in a text.

Read event, background and status

Accommodation and what is included

  • Un hôtel, un camping, un gîte and une auberge de jeunesse name different types of accommodation. A gîte often refers to a holiday cottage or similar self-catering place; un camping is the campsite, une tente the tent and un camping-car the camper van. Un billet is a ticket rather than accommodation.
  • Pension complète means full board and demi-pension half board. Read which meals and extras are included in the particular offer instead of treating those phrases as a promise that every drink or activity is free. Libre can mean available, while gratuit explicitly means without charge in this context.

Original fictional reading example

  • Départ à 9 h 15. Arrivée à 10 h 45. Aller simple : 18 €. Petit-déjeuner non compris. The stated journey lasts 1 hour 30 minutes, the fare is for a one-way ticket and breakfast is excluded. These are original invented practice details, not a real timetable, price or booking offer.
  • Identify time, price, ticket type and negation before inferring meaning. Do not turn a single fare into a return fare or included into excluded without textual evidence. In open writing, a real or imagined holiday is acceptable; use a consistent time frame, connected details and agreement appropriate to the chosen speaker.
