Types of performance
- A solo features an individual solo part and can be accompanied. An ensemble involves performers making music together; assessed ensemble definitions may require a significant individual role and genuine interaction beyond simple accompaniment.
- Use the current qualification rules for permitted forces, duration, documentation, recording and conductor use. The examples are general skills practice rather than a universal submission checklist. Practical performing ability requires actual performance evidence, not just correct written definitions.
General term and assessment context differ
Key skills
- Accuracy concerns the relevant notes, rhythms and task framework. Fluency is controlled continuity and timing, including intended rests or tempo changes; a detached passage can be fluent. Technique provides appropriate control of a voice, instrument or technology.
- Expression and interpretation shape phrasing, tone, articulation, timing and dynamics to fit the musical style and intention. Intonation concerns pitch relationships during the performance, while tuning beforehand only establishes an initial reference.
Distinguish performance dimensions
Ensemble skills
- Balance relative levels for the intended roles, allowing a melody or solo to be prominent where required. Blend tone and articulation when a unified colour is intended; deliberate contrast is also a valid musical choice.
- Agree entries, releases and changes through listening and suitable cues. Follow a conductor where one is used and permitted; some assessed tasks restrict conductor use. Synchronisation coordinates intended relationships, including off-beat entries and shared tempo flexibility, rather than requiring every part to attack together.
Agree roles and cues in an ensemble
Practice
- Set a specific target, select a suitable passage, practise with purpose, then reconnect it with the surrounding material. Slow practice, a metronome, recording, mental rehearsal and section work are possible tools rather than a compulsory routine for every learner.
- Regular focused sessions can support review, but session length and method depend on the performer and task. Use appropriate teacher guidance for preparation and technique. A recording helps identify an issue and compare revisions; it does not automatically improve the result.
A targeted practice cycle
Performing well
- Use a suitable adaptable setup and a familiar preparation routine for the chosen resource. Stage communication should fit the performer, style and task rather than requiring a fixed posture, dress, standing position or pattern of eye contact.
- Preparation and manageable rehearsal can help some performers handle nerves, but responses differ. Confidence is not itself proof of accuracy or expressive control. Keep assessment evidence focused on the required musical performance rather than one visible personality style.
Evaluating performance
- In the fictional rehearsal example, bars 1–4 match the written pitches and rhythm, bar 5 begins one beat early, and bars 5–8 have a masked melody. The evidence supports separate accuracy, coordination and balance observations; it does not prove a general intonation failure.
- Retest the bar-5 entry by counting the lead-in and agreeing a cue. Retest balance by adjusting the accompaniment or projection for the intended roles. Compare the same passage in another run and state what changed. This written exercise is not a recording of a real student and cannot certify practical performance skill.
