Lektionsnotizen

Choose the activity verb for the meaning

  • Juego al fútbol, al tenis or al baloncesto uses the taught jugar a sports pattern. Toco la guitarra, el piano or la batería uses tocar for an instrument; hago deporte and hago natación name other activity patterns.
  • Leo, veo la tele, escucho música, bailo and quedo con mis amigos describe different hobbies. Jugar without a is also used with games and sports in some regions; one course pattern does not erase that variation.

Frequency is meaning, not an exact percentage

  • A menudo is often, a veces sometimes, raramente rarely, siempre always and nunca never in these examples. Todos los días means every day, los fines de semana at weekends and una vez por semana once a week.
  • Nunca juego and no juego nunca are alternative negative-concord patterns. The negative words do not automatically cancel each other; do not add a second no before a verb already preceded by nunca in this ordinary pattern.

Invitations, replies and future plans

  • ¿Quieres ir al cine? addresses tú. Sí, vale accepts; lo siento, no puedo declines by saying I cannot. No quiero means I do not want to, so it gives a different meaning rather than the same reason.
  • ¿Quedamos a las seis? suggests meeting at six. Voy a jugar mañana uses present ir + a + infinitive for a future plan; often called near future, it need not mean immediately or a guaranteed event.

Contractions use the article el

  • A + el becomes al and de + el becomes del when el is the article: voy al cine, cerca del cine. A la piscina, a los conciertos and de la biblioteca remain separate.
  • The accented personal pronoun él is different: a él, de él. Identify the actual words before contracting them; do not turn every a or de before another article into al or del.

Give an opinion with a clear referent

  • Me gusta leer porque es interesante gives a preference and reason. Me gustan los videojuegos uses plural agreement with videojuegos; me encanta escuchar música uses singular with an infinitive activity.
  • El programa es aburrido means the programme is boring; estoy aburrido/aburrida describes being bored. Divertido/divertida and emocionante can describe stated activities, while another speaker may give another opinion.

Present stem changes have limits

  • Useful present yo forms are juego, prefiero, puedo and quiero. They show u → ue, e → ie or o → ue depending on the verb; do not apply one change to every infinitive.
  • Nosotros/as retains the unchanged vowel in jugamos, preferimos, podemos and queremos in these present patterns. Context and the subject determine the required form; the yo example is not the whole conjugation.

Music words do not all name performance

  • El cantante/la cantante is the singer, el concierto the concert, el grupo the group or band in this context and la música music. Pop, rock and rap name styles in appropriate accounts.
  • Escucho música means listening, while toco el piano means playing the instrument. This written vocabulary lesson does not ask you to identify a sound clip or own an instrument.

Sport terms in a supplied account

  • El equipo can mean the team, el partido the match, el entrenamiento training, ganar to win and perder to lose in this sport context. Partido and equipo have other meanings elsewhere.
  • Los sábados juego al fútbol. Me gusta porque es divertido. También me encanta escuchar música. This fictional model supplies its own hobby and opinion; other coherent leisure activities are valid.
