Course Routes and Structure
- Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0475) offers two routes: an examined route and an exam plus coursework route.
- All candidates take Paper 1 (Poetry and Prose); then they take either Paper 2 (Drama and Unseen) or Component 3 (Coursework).
- Examined route: study three set texts and prepare for one unseen text.
- Coursework route: study two set texts and texts of your choice for coursework.
- There is no separate unseen paper; the unseen question is Paper 2 Section B.
Paper 1: Poetry and Prose
- Compulsory written paper: 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks, 50% of the qualification.
- Answer two questions: one from Section A (Poetry) and one from Section B (Prose). Each question is worth 25 marks.
- Section A (Poetry): choose one question from a choice of two on each set text. The poems are printed in the question paper.
- Section B (Prose): choose one question from two essay questions on each set text. Questions require knowledge of the whole text.
- This is an open text exam: you may take your copy of the selected text into the exam.
- In your set text you may use highlighting, underlining or brief handwritten notes (words and phrases, not full sentences).
- Not allowed: sticky notes, separate pieces of paper, or extended handwritten notes in the books.
- Published notes or editor's commentary may be used but must be quoted and referenced appropriately; passing them off as your own is plagiarism.
Paper 2: Drama and Unseen
- Optional written paper: 2 hours, 50 marks, 50% of the qualification. Taken instead of Component 3.
- Answer two questions: one from Section A (Drama) and one from Section B (Unseen). Each question is worth 25 marks.
- Section A (Drama): choose one question from a choice of two on each set text. Relevant passages are printed on the question paper.
- Drama questions: one is passage-based and one is an essay question.
- Section B (Unseen): choose one question from two. One is based on a poem, the other on a prose extract.
- For the unseen, spend about 30 minutes reading and planning, and about 45 minutes writing your answer.
- This is an open text exam with the same rules on annotations as Paper 1.
Component 3: Coursework
- Optional coursework component: 50 marks, 50% of the qualification. Taken instead of Paper 2.
- Submit two essays: one comparing texts and one comparing poems.
- Comparing texts: compare two complete texts. One must be drama; the second may be drama or prose. About 1500 words, worth 30 marks.
- Comparing poems: compare two poems. These may be poems studied for Paper 1. About 1000 words, worth 20 marks.
- Internally assessed and externally moderated.
Assessment Objectives (AOs)
- AO1: Show detailed knowledge of the content of literary texts in the three main forms (drama, poetry and prose), supported by reference to the text.
- AO2: Understand the meanings of literary texts and their contexts and explore texts beyond surface meanings to show deeper awareness of ideas and attitudes.
- AO3: Analyse ways in which writers use language, structure and form to create meanings and achieve effects.
- AO4: Communicate a sensitive and informed personal response to literary texts.
Weighting of Assessment Objectives
- Each assessment objective is worth 25% of the qualification: AO1 25%, AO2 25%, AO3 25%, AO4 25%.
- The same weightings apply to each component: Paper 1, Paper 2 and Component 3 each have 25% for each AO.
- All questions test all four assessment objectives holistically.
What 'Informed Personal Response' Means
- Personal response means expressing what the text means to you in response to the task.
- Informed means referring closely to the text in justifying your interpretations.
- All questions encourage an informed personal response.

- Explore: Write in detail about particular aspects.
- Phrases you may see: Explore how the writer ...; How does the writer ...?; In what ways does the writer ...?; How far does the writer ...?; To what extent does the writer ...?
