Lektionsnotizen
The novel and its context
- ×A Man of the People×(1966) is Chinua Achebe's satire of political corruption in a newly independent, unnamed West African country closely resembling Nigeria.
- It was published in January 1966, days before Nigeria's first military coup — and it ends with a coup, so it seemed eerily prophetic.
- Achebe (1930–2013), author of×Things Fall Apart×, turns here from the colonial past to the post-independence present.
- Set for 2027 only (not 2026).
Narrator and form
- The story is told in the first person by Odili Samalu, a young, university-educated teacher at the village school in Anata.
- Odili is witty, self-aware in places — and unreliable: he condemns corruption while enjoying its pleasures, and his motives are often jealousy and pride.
- The famous first line sets the ironic tone: Chief Nanga was "the most approachable politician in the country".
- Achebe uses satire — humour, irony and exaggeration to attack greed and hypocrisy — plus proverbs and a mix of standard English and pidgin.
Part 1: Odili in Bori
- Chief the Honourable M. A. Nanga, M.P., Minister of Culture, visits Anata, where he once taught. He is charismatic and "a man of the people", and recognises Odili, his former pupil.
- Odili, who despises the government, is charmed and accepts an invitation to stay at Nanga's house in the capital, Bori.
- There he enjoys luxury — a flushing toilet, electricity, a big car — and sees Nanga's ignorance: the Minister of Culture has not read the national novelist's book.
- Odili brings his girlfriend Elsie, a nurse, to Nanga's house; that night Nanga sleeps with her. Humiliated, Odili swears revenge: he will win Nanga's intended young second wife, Edna, and challenge him politically.
Part 2: the campaign
- Odili's friend Max (Maxwell Kulamo), a lawyer, and his fiancée Eunice found a new party, the Common People's Convention (C.P.C.); Odili stands against Nanga in his home constituency.
- Nanga offers Odili a bribe (and a scholarship abroad) to withdraw; he refuses. But Odili learns Max has taken money from Chief Koko — Max says it will fund the campaign.
- Odili's father, Hezekiah, local chairman of Nanga's party, suffers for his son's candidacy.
- Odili's pursuit of Edna turns into real love; Edna feels trapped because her family depends on Nanga's bride price.
The climax and ending
- Odili goes in disguise to Nanga's campaign launch. Nanga spots him, mocks him on stage and slaps him; the crowd beats Odili unconscious.
- In hospital he learns Nanga has been returned unopposed; Max has been killed by Koko's thugs, and Eunice shoots Koko.
- Violence spreads; the army seizes power in a coup, and the corrupt politicians, including Nanga, are arrested.
- Max is declared a martyr. Odili plans to marry Edna, paying her bride price partly with party funds.
- Odili's closing reflection: a good death is one that inspires someone to avenge you without asking to be paid — as Eunice did for Max.
Key characters
- Chief Nanga — charming, generous, corrupt, ignorant; a "man of the people" who exploits the people.
- Odili Samalu — idealistic yet hypocritical narrator; motivated as much by pride as principle.
- Max — sincere reformer who compromises; Eunice — the one who acts decisively.
- Edna — young woman caught between family obligation and her own wishes; Elsie — Odili's casual girlfriend.
- Mrs Nanga — Nanga's first wife, loyal but humiliated; Chief Koko — corrupt minister who has Max killed; Josiah — the trader of the village proverb.
Themes
- Corruption and power: the ruling party's "eat-and-let-eat" regime; bribery, thuggery and rigged elections.
- Hypocrisy: Odili's idealism is mixed with self-interest; even Max takes money.
- The people's cynicism: villagers expect politicians to "eat" and admire those who do.
- Post-colonial disillusion: after independence a few — "the smart and the lucky and hardly ever the best" — scrambled into the one shelter the colonisers left.
- Women and marriage: Edna and Elsie are treated as prizes between men; bride price shapes Edna's choices.
Methods and key images
- Satire and irony: the Minister of Culture who knows nothing of culture; a "man of the people" who robs them.
- Proverbs: when the trader Josiah steals a blind beggar's stick to make a charm, the village boycotts him — Josiah has taken away enough for the owner to notice. Only when greed goes that far do people act.
- The coup ending: resolution by force, not by the people — a warning rather than a triumph.
- Unreliable narration: the reader must judge Odili as well as Nanga.
- Useful essay foci: Nanga; Odili as narrator; corruption; the ending; Edna.
