Plot (three stages)
- Stage 1: orphan Pip lives with his sister and Joe Gargery on the Kent marshes. He helps the escaped Magwitch and later visits Satis House, where Estella’s treatment intensifies his social shame. He becomes Joe’s apprentice; Mrs Joe is later attacked.
- Stage 2: Jaggers announces an anonymous fortune and Pip goes to London, befriending Herbert Pocket. Pip neglects Joe and assumes Miss Havisham intends him for Estella. Mrs Joe later dies, while Biddy remains connected to the household.
- Stage 3: Magwitch reveals himself as benefactor. Pip tries to help him escape; Magwitch is captured and dies in custody. Joe nurses the ill Pip and pays his creditors. Pip works abroad with Herbert and resolves to repay Joe. In the published revised ending, he later meets Estella at ruined Satis House.
- Further links matter: Estella marries Bentley Drummle. Magwitch and Molly, Jaggers’s housekeeper, are revealed as Estella’s parents. Miss Havisham seeks forgiveness and is badly burned in an accidental fire, later dying. Orlick admits attacking Mrs Joe and threatens Pip before rescue. Joe marries Biddy; Pip’s expectation of marrying her is mistaken.
The source of the expectations
Characters
- Pip is both the young experiencing character and the older narrator. Magwitch funds his expectations; Jaggers administers them. Joe is a skilled blacksmith whose care exposes Pip’s ingratitude. Miss Havisham shapes Estella but later repents. Biddy, Herbert, Wemmick, Molly, Drummle and Orlick develop alternative relationships between class, conduct and knowledge.
Skilled work and care

Context
- First published in weekly parts in All the Year Round in 1860–61. Class, money, professional power and penal transportation shape the story. Transportation meant compulsory removal to a colony, not only Australia. Compare the earlier period narrated with publication, and distinguish the conventional status of gentleman from kindness or integrity.
