What Are Word Classes?

  • Word classes (also called parts of speech) are categories of words that share similar grammatical properties.
  • Words in the same class behave similarly in sentences: they play similar roles and often change form in similar ways.
  • Common English word classes include nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, prepositions, conjunctions, and determiners.
  • Some classes are open — they gain new members often (e.g. nouns, verbs, adjectives).
  • Other classes are closed — they rarely gain new members (e.g. pronouns, conjunctions).

Nouns

  • Nouns name people, places, things, or ideas.
  • Common nouns name general things (e.g.×city×,×dog×).
  • Proper nouns name specific people, places, or things and are capitalised (e.g.×London×,×Sarah×).
  • Abstract nouns name ideas, qualities, or states that you cannot see or touch (e.g.×freedom×,×happiness×).
  • Collective nouns name groups of people or things (e.g.×team×,×flock×).

Pronouns

  • Pronouns replace nouns or noun phrases to avoid repetition (e.g.×he×,×she×,×it×,×they×).
  • They can refer to people or things already mentioned or understood.
  • Pronouns are a closed class — new pronouns are rarely added to the language.

Verbs

  • Verbs express actions, events, or states of being (e.g.×run×,×think×,×is×).
  • Auxiliary verbs (helping verbs) are used with a main verb to form tenses, moods, or voices (e.g.×be×,×have×,×do×).
  • Modal verbs express possibility, necessity, ability, or permission (e.g.×can×,×must×,×should×).
  • Verbs change form to show tense, person, and number.

Adjectives

  • Adjectives describe or modify nouns and pronouns (e.g.×happy×,×red×,×large×).
  • They often answer questions like×What kind?×or×Which one?×.
  • Adjectives can be comparative (e.g.×bigger×) or superlative (e.g.×biggest×).

Adverbs

  • Adverbs modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, or whole clauses (e.g.×quickly×,×very×,×fortunately×).
  • They often answer questions like×How?×,×When?×,×Where?×, or×To what extent?×.
  • Many adverbs are formed by adding -ly to an adjective, but not all (e.g.×fast×,×well×).

Prepositions

  • Prepositions show relationships between a noun or pronoun and another word in the sentence (e.g.×in×,×on×,×at×,×by×,×with×).
  • They often indicate location, time, direction, or manner.
  • Prepositions are a closed class — new prepositions are rarely added.

Conjunctions

  • Conjunctions join words, phrases, or clauses together.
  • Coordinating conjunctions join items of equal grammatical rank (e.g.×and×,×but×,×or×).
  • Subordinating conjunctions introduce a subordinate clause and show its relationship to the main clause (e.g.×because×,×although×,×when×).
  • Conjunctions are a closed class.

Determiners

  • Determiners come before nouns to specify which one or how much (e.g.×the×,×a×,×this×,×some×,×my×).
  • They include articles (×a×,×an×,×the×), demonstratives (×this×,×that×), possessives (×my×,×your×), and quantifiers (×some×,×many×).
  • Determiners are a closed class.

Words Can Belong to Different Classes

  • The same word can be a different word class depending on how it is used in a sentence.
  • For example,×run×can be a verb (×I run every day×) or a noun (×I went for a run×).
  • Similarly,×light×can be a noun (×the light is bright×), an adjective (×a light bag×), or a verb (×to light a candle×).
  • Always consider the word's function in the sentence to identify its class.
