What Contour Lines Show

  • A contour line joins points of equal height above sea level.
  • Contours show the relief (shape and height) of the land on a flat map.
  • The contour interval is the height difference between one contour line and the next.
  • On an Ordnance Survey map, the contour interval is usually printed in the map key.
  • Contour lines can be curved, straight, or a mix of both.

Spot Heights and Triangulation Pillars

  • A spot height is a dot with a number giving the exact height of that point.
  • A triangulation pillar (trig point) is a fixed marker on the ground, shown on maps with its height.
  • Spot heights and trig points give precise heights, while contours show the general shape of the land.

Layer Colouring

  • Layer colouring uses bands of colour to show different height ranges.
  • Each colour band lies between two contour lines.
  • Layer colouring makes it easy to see high and low areas at a glance.

Reading Slopes from Contours

  • When contour lines are close together, the slope is steep.
  • When contour lines are far apart, the slope is gentle.
  • Evenly spaced contours mean a steady, uniform slope.

Recognising Landforms

  • A hill is shown by closed contour rings that get smaller towards the top.
  • A valley is shown by contour lines that form a V shape pointing uphill.
  • A ridge is shown by contour lines that form a V shape pointing downhill.
  • Contour patterns let you identify hills, valleys and ridges without visiting the place.

Drawing a Cross-Section

  • A cross-section is a side view of the land along a straight line on the map.
  • To draw one, mark where the line crosses each contour and note its height.
  • Plot these heights on a graph with height on the vertical axis and distance on the horizontal axis.
  • Join the points with a smooth line to show the shape of the land.

Describing a Route on an OS Map

  • Use compass directions and named features to describe the route.
  • Mention whether the route goes uphill, downhill, or stays level.
  • Refer to contour patterns to describe steep and gentle sections.
  • Include spot heights and trig points to give exact heights along the way.

Why Contours Matter

  • Contours help you plan walks, cycle routes and other journeys.
  • They show how steep the land is, which affects difficulty and safety.
  • Ordnance Survey has recorded contour lines in Great Britain and Ireland since about 1843.
