Catatan pelajaran
The poem at a glance
- "Meeting at Night" by Robert Browning (1812–1889), published in 1845 in×Dramatic Romances and Lyrics×; its companion piece is "Parting at Morning".
- A lover travels by boat across the sea at night, lands on a beach, crosses three fields to a farm, taps at a window, and meets his beloved.
- Two six-line stanzas (sestets): the sea journey, then the land journey and the meeting.
- Rich in sensory imagery — sight, sound, touch, smell — building to the climax: "the two hearts beating each to each!"
- Key ideas: passionate love, anticipation, secrecy, the journey as desire.
Stanza 1: the sea
- "The grey sea and the long black land; / And the yellow half-moon large and low": a dark, painterly scene with a glowing moon; the lines are built from lists joined by "And" (polysyndeton).
- "the startled little waves that leap / In fiery ringlets from their sleep": personification — the waves wake, startled, as the boat cuts through; moonlight makes them glitter like fire (and like curls of hair).
- "As I gain the cove with pushing prow, / And quench its speed i' the slushy sand": the boat drives into the sand and stops; alliteration (pushing prow, slushy sand) and sound effects.
- The imagery is sensual and energetic — the landscape seems to share the lover's excitement.
Stanza 2: the land and the meeting
- "Then a mile of warm sea-scented beach; / Three fields to cross till a farm appears": the journey continues, measured out — the lover is counting the distance.
- "A tap at the pane, the quick sharp scratch / And blue spurt of a lighted match": a sudden flare of sound and light — onomatopoeia and sibilance ("scratch", "spurt").
- The match can suggest the spark of passion being lit.
- "And a voice less loud, thro' its joys and fears, / Than the two hearts beating each to each!": whispering because the meeting is secret; their hearts are louder than the voice. The exclamation mark marks the climax.
Form and structure
- Two sestets, each rhymed ABCCBA — an enclosed pattern where the rhymes reach towards each other, like the lovers.
- Mostly iambic tetrameter, driving forward like the journey.
- Written as a single long sentence of fragments, joined by "And", "As", "Then" — breathless, eager, never pausing.
- The poem moves sea → land → house → heart: from the vast and impersonal to the intimate.
- First-person voice ("As I gain the cove"), though the speaker is a persona, not necessarily Browning.
Themes and interpretations
- Love and passion: the physical world reflects the lover's desire.
- Anticipation: the whole poem is the build-up to a meeting.
- Secrecy: night, a farm, a tap at the window, a quiet voice, "joys and fears" — a hidden or forbidden love?
- Some readers find the language subtly sensual ("pushing prow", "slushy sand", "fiery ringlets").
- The companion poem "Parting at Morning" turns from love back to the demands of the world ("a world of men").
- Comparisons: "A Quoi Bon Dire" (love), "Because I Liked You Better" (love hidden), "Tears, Idle Tears" (love remembered).
