What is Direct Speech?

Direct speech is when you write the exact words someone says.
Example: Tom said, "I love pizza."
The exact words are the spoken words inside the quotation marks.
Direct speech is different from reported speech, which tells what someone said without using their exact words.
Reported speech example: Tom said that he loved pizza.

Quotation Marks

Quotation marks are punctuation marks used in pairs to show direct speech.
They are also called inverted commas.
The pair has an opening quotation mark and a closing quotation mark.
In English, we usually use double quotation marks: "...".
Put quotation marks around the exact words someone says.

Punctuating Direct Speech

Start the spoken words with a capital letter.
Put a comma, full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark before the closing quotation mark.
If the reporting clause comes before the speech, use a comma after it.
Example: Mum said, "Time for dinner!"
If the speech comes first, put the punctuation inside the quotation marks.
Example: "Time for dinner!" shouted Mum.

The Reporting Clause

The reporting clause tells who is speaking and how they said it.
It can come before, after, or in the middle of the speech.
Before: She said, "Hello."
After: "Hello," she said.
Middle: "Hello," she said, "how are you?"
When the reporting clause comes after the speech, use a comma before it (unless the speech ends with ? or !).

New Speaker, New Line

Start a new line each time a different person speaks.
This helps readers know who is talking.

Each new speaker's words begin on a new line.

Choosing Speech Verbs

Use speech verbs like said, asked, shouted, whispered, replied.
These verbs show how something was said.
Instead of always using 'said', try 'cried', 'murmured', 'exclaimed'.

Common Mistakes to Avoid
