Catatan pelajaran

What Are Semicolons, Colons, Dashes, and Bullet Points?

  • These are punctuation marks that help make your writing clearer and more interesting.
  • A semicolon (;) looks like a comma with a dot above it.
  • A colon (:) is two dots, one above the other.
  • A dash (—) is a long horizontal line.
  • Bullet points are dots or symbols used to list items.
  • Each mark has a special job in a sentence.

Using Semicolons to Join Ideas

  • Use a semicolon to join two complete sentences that are closely related.
  • Example: I love reading; my sister loves drawing.
  • You don't need a joining word like 'and' or 'but' when you use a semicolon.
  • The two parts must be able to stand alone as sentences.
  • After a semicolon, use a small letter unless the next word is a name or 'I'.
  • Semicolons show that the two ideas are equal in importance.

Using Semicolons in Lists

  • Use semicolons to separate items in a list when the items already have commas.
  • Example: We visited Paris, France; Rome, Italy; and Madrid, Spain.
  • This helps avoid confusion between the commas in the items and the commas between items.
  • Think of the semicolon as a 'super comma' for complicated lists.
  • It makes the list easier to read and understand.

Using Colons to Introduce

  • Use a colon to introduce a list, an explanation, an example, or a quotation.
  • Before a colon, you must have a complete sentence.
  • Example of a list: You need these items: a pencil, a ruler, and an eraser.
  • Example of an explanation: She was happy: she had won the prize.
  • Example of a quotation: He said: 'Time to go!'
  • After a colon, you can use a capital letter if it starts a new sentence or a quotation.

Using Dashes for Breaks and Afterthoughts

  • Use a dash to show an abrupt break in thought or an afterthought.
  • Example: I was going to the park—but then it started raining.
  • A single dash can be used before an afterthought at the end of a sentence.
  • A pair of dashes can surround extra information in the middle of a sentence.
  • Example: The dog—a big friendly lab—ran towards us.
  • Dashes are stronger than commas and create a dramatic pause.

Punctuating Bullet Points

  • When you write a bulleted list, keep the punctuation consistent.
  • If each bullet is a full sentence, start with a capital letter and end with a full stop.
  • If bullets are short phrases, you may not need a full stop.
  • Make sure all bullets follow the same pattern.
  • Example of full sentences: - I like apples. - I like bananas.
  • Example of phrases: - Apples - Bananas

Choosing the Right Mark

  • Use a comma for a short pause within a sentence.
  • Use a semicolon to join two related sentences without a conjunction.
  • Use a colon to introduce something that follows.
  • Use a dash for a sudden change or an afterthought.
  • Use a full stop to end a sentence completely.
  • Think about the relationship between your ideas to pick the best mark.
