Gender and plurals
- Nouns have grammatical gender, learned with their forms: le/un chat, la/une voiture. L’ can introduce either gender before a vowel or silent h; an elided article alone does not reveal it.
- Common plurals include chats, gâteaux, journaux and chevaux; œil has the irregular plural yeux. Many -al nouns take -aux but des bals and des festivals are exceptions. Learn the actual word rather than adding one suffix to every noun.
Learn the actual plural
Articles
- Definite articles are le/la/l’/les; indefinite examples are un chat, une voiture, des livres. Du pain, de la soupe and de l’eau express nonspecified quantities, with elision determined by initial sound.
- Au/aux contract à plus le/les and du/des can contract de plus le/les. The same form can have different roles: des livres introduces books, while parler des livres includes de plus les. Read its construction rather than assign one meaning to the isolated word.
Read the article’s function
Adjective agreement and position
- Petit/petite/petits/petites shows common agreement; timide keeps the same singular form and beau/belle changes irregularly. Les yeux marron keeps marron invariable in that colour use.
- Un petit livre rouge shows common adjective positions. The BAGS memory aid covers some frequent examples, but other positions exist and can affect meaning, as in un grand homme and un homme grand. Un bel arbre uses masculine bel before the vowel-initial noun.
Agreement and position examples
Comparatives and superlatives
- Plus grand que, moins cher que and aussi cher que compare qualities; le film le plus intéressant illustrates a superlative with its article and adjective agreeing with film.
- Bon/meilleur is an adjective contrast, while bien/mieux supplies an adverbial comparison in elle chante mieux. Le meilleur film and elle chante le mieux can both use English best in different roles; the context must identify which is requested.
Adjective versus adverb
Direct object pronouns
- Le/la/les can replace a direct object with a clear antecedent: je le lis for le livre, je la vois for la voiture and je les vois for a plural group. The same written forms can be articles elsewhere.
- In the standard perfect examples Je l’ai vu for le film and Je l’ai vue for la voiture, the participle agrees with the preceding direct object. Je vais le voir instead places le before its infinitive voir. These are selected constructions rather than every possible participle rule.
Track direct objects
Indirect object pronouns
- Lui and leur replace the singular/plural indirect person complement with appropriate verb constructions: Je donne un livre à Zoé → Je lui donne un livre; à mes amis → Je leur donne un livre. Neither form marks the person’s gender here.
- Compare Je la vois and Je lui parle. Voir takes a direct object here, while parler à quelqu’un has an indirect complement. Indirect leur has no s; possessive leurs in leurs livres is a different grammatical function.
Choose from the verb construction
Y and en
- Je vais au parc → J’y vais uses y for the established destination. Je mange du pain → J’en mange uses en for a nonspecified food quantity. The antecedent supplies meaning.
- Je mange deux pommes → J’en mange deux keeps the number. These examples are not universal replacements for every à/de complement, every person or every location; the verb construction and intended reference still matter.
Use the established reference
Relative pronouns
- In la fille qui chante, qui is subject of chante and refers to la fille. In le livre que j’ai lu, que is direct object of ai lu and refers to le livre; je is the subject in that relative clause.
- Qui/que is selected by grammatical role, not person versus thing: le livre qui tombe and la fille que je vois show both combinations. Preposition-plus-relative constructions such as à qui require their own analysis.
Role inside the relative clause
Pronoun order
- Je te le donne puts te then le before the conjugated verb. Je vais te le donner places them before the infinitive they complement. Keep the role and reference of both pronouns clear.
- Affirmative imperatives differ: Donne-le-moi. Negative imperatives use Ne me le donne pas. The position and order depend on construction, so before the verb is not a universal rule for all French sentences.
Order follows the construction
