レッスンノート

Capital Letters

  • Always start a sentence with a capital letter.
  • Use a capital for the word I (for example, 'I am happy').
  • Use capitals for proper nouns – names of people, places, days, months, and holidays (for example, 'Anna', 'London', 'Monday', 'July').
  • Don't use capitals for common nouns like 'dog' or 'city' unless they start a sentence.

End Marks

  • A full stop (.) ends a telling sentence (for example, 'The cat is sleeping.').
  • A question mark (?) ends a question (for example, 'Where is my book?').
  • An exclamation mark (!) ends a sentence that shows strong feeling (for example, 'Watch out!').
  • Choose the right end mark to show the type of sentence you are writing.

Commas in Lists

  • Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list (for example, 'I like apples, bananas, and oranges.').
  • In a list of three or more, put a comma after each item except the last one.
  • You can use a comma before the 'and' in a list (this is called the Oxford comma).
  • Commas in lists make your writing clearer and easier to read.

Commas After Fronted Phrases

  • A fronted phrase is a group of words that comes before the main part of a sentence.
  • Put a comma after a fronted phrase (for example, 'After school, I do my homework.').
  • The comma tells the reader to pause before the main part of the sentence.
  • If the phrase is short, you might not need a comma, but it's often safer to use one.

Commas in Compound Sentences

  • A compound sentence joins two simple sentences with a joining word like 'and', 'but', or 'so'.
  • Put a comma before the joining word (for example, 'I wanted to play, but it was raining.').
  • The comma helps separate the two parts so the sentence is not confusing.
  • Don't use a comma if you are just joining two words or short phrases.

How Punctuation Changes Meaning

  • Punctuation can change the meaning of a sentence.
  • Example: 'Woman, without her man, is nothing' means a woman needs a man.
  • Example: 'Woman: without her, man is nothing' means a man needs a woman.
  • Missing or misplaced commas can make a sentence say something different from what you meant.
  • Always check your punctuation to make sure your meaning is clear.

Proofreading

  • Proofreading means checking your writing for mistakes.
  • When you proofread, look for missing capitals, wrong end marks, and missing or extra commas.
  • Read your sentences aloud to hear where pauses should be.
  • Fix any punctuation errors you find to make your writing correct and clear.
