What the cluster covers
- Scope: this is an AQA 8702 Love and Relationships overview. Study all fifteen poems in the chosen cluster; other exam boards differ. Born Yesterday is not in this selection.
- Byron: When We Two Parted; Shelley: Love’s Philosophy; Robert Browning: Porphyria’s Lover; Elizabeth Barrett Browning: Sonnet 29 – I think of thee!; Hardy: Neutral Tones.
- Dooley: Letters From Yorkshire; Mew: The Farmer’s Bride; Day Lewis: Walking Away; Causley: Eden Rock; Heaney: Follower.
- Armitage: Mother, any distance; Duffy: Before You Were Mine; Sheers: Winter Swans; Nagra: Singh Song!; Waterhouse: Climbing My Grandfather.
A cluster contains different relationships
Key ideas
- Desire, loss and control: When We Two Parted and Neutral Tones revisit damaged relationships. Love’s Philosophy makes a persuasive argument through nature. I think of thee! develops desire for presence. Porphyria’s Lover exposes violent possession; The Farmer’s Bride gives an uneasy marriage through the farmer’s limited perspective.
- Family and independence: Walking Away considers a parent’s letting go; Mother, any distance links practical support with separation. Follower reverses who follows whom. Before You Were Mine imagines a mother’s earlier life; Climbing My Grandfather develops an extended exploration of an elder.
- Memory and connection: Eden Rock imagines parents beyond a stream and permits a reading about death and reunion; the speaker is not a parent lamenting a child. Letters From Yorkshire connects different lives through correspondence. Winter Swans moves from distance toward closeness without proving all future conflict solved.
- Language and identity: Singh Song! presents British Indian newlywed affection alongside work and family tensions. Its constructed voice and wordplay are artistic choices, not evidence that non-standard English is deficient or that the marriage must cross ethnic boundaries.

Writing about poems
- Build a comparison around the question using accurate textual details. Connect voice, imagery, form and structure with a supported reading; a form label alone proves no emotional effect.
- Distinguish speaker and poet, and do not treat persuasion or possessive violence as authorial approval. Consider uncertainty, change and contrasts within each poem. This overview supports revision but does not replace close study of all fifteen texts.
