수업 노트

Before you listen or read

  • Read the actual task instructions, response language and answer format. If preview is permitted, identify the information sought: number, time, person, place, opinion or reason. A prediction should concern answer type, not an invented answer.
  • Use the complete message and locate evidence. Do not assume every task permits a preview or second play; practice, comprehension and dictation formats can differ. Follow the current board/tier instructions for an assessment.

Listening strategies

  • Listen for the complete message, including speaker, time frame, negatives and correction words such as mais finalement. A familiar keyword may belong to a past plan, a rejected choice or someone else’s view.
  • Original teacher-read script: Je voulais partir à huit heures, mais finalement je partirai à neuf heures. Le billet coûte quinze euros, pas cinquante. Hide the text during an optional teacher reading; the answers are 9:00 and €15. No audio recording is attached and reading the visible script is not a listening-performance test.

Numbers, times and dates

  • Soixante-dix is 70, quatre-vingts 80 and quatre-vingt-dix 90. Quinze is 15 and cinquante 50. These are common forms in the reference French taught here; regional number forms also exist. In ordinary cardinal spelling, vingt loses s when another number follows, as in quatre-vingt-dix.
  • Midi et quart means 12:15; huit heures moins le quart 7:45; une heure et demie 1:30. Et quart adds fifteen minutes, while moins le quart subtracts fifteen from the named hour. A routine such as Je joue le mardi means on Tuesdays; a particular dated context can instead refer to one day.

Reading strategies

  • Skim for the overall topic, scan for the requested detail, then read the surrounding sentence to check its meaning. Related form and meaning can make musique/music a helpful clue, but similarity alone is not proof.
  • False friends include actuellement/currently rather than actually; librairie/bookshop rather than library; and assister à un concert/attend a concert rather than assist someone. In France collège means lower secondary school. Shared origin and misleading modern meaning can coexist, so cognate and false friend are not absolute opposites.

Tenses in texts

  • J’ai joué forms the perfect with avoir plus a past participle. J’ai quinze ans is a present expression of age; j’ai alone does not identify a past tense. C’était amusant uses the imperfect for a past description.
  • Je vais jouer uses aller plus infinitive for a future plan; je vais à l’école can describe present movement or a routine. Hier and demain indicate time reference, but a time word alone does not determine the grammatical form. Read the complete construction.

Question types

  • Tasks can include multiple choice, matching, gap filling, open responses, translation or dictation; available types depend on the current course and assessment. Follow the response language and amount of detail requested.
  • In true/false/not-mentioned tasks, distinguish a contradiction from absence of evidence. A text that gives no age does not show someone is or is not sixteen. For dictation, transcribe the heard French rather than summarising its meaning in English.

Separate kinds of evidence

Translating into English

  • Preserve speaker, time, negation, quantities and contrast in a natural English translation. Je ne joue plus au tennis means I no longer play tennis; pas du tout means not at all rather than merely not very.
  • Word-for-word translation can distort idioms or syntax, but words still supply evidence. Translate assister à un concert as attend a concert and test the complete meaning against context. Do not omit a negative to make a sentence sound smoother.

Preserve negative meaning

Dealing with unknown words

  • Use context, part of speech, related words and plausible grammar to form a provisional interpretation of an unknown word. In Elle range les livres dans la bibliothèque, the surrounding nouns identify a book/library context but do not by themselves prove the verb’s exact meaning.
  • Decide what the task requires. A question about place may be answerable without translating range; a question assessing that verb needs stronger knowledge. Check an inferred meaning rather than treating a plausible guess as certain.

Original two-speaker reading practice

  • Lina dit : « Je n’aime plus le tennis. Je préfère chanter. » Adam dit : « J’adore le tennis, mais je ne joue jamais le mardi. » Read each statement with its named speaker; do not transfer one person’s opinion to the other.
  • Lina now prefers singing and no longer likes tennis. Adam loves tennis but never plays on Tuesdays. Their ages and weekend plans are not stated. These are original written examples; a teacher may separately read them aloud with text hidden for listening practice.
