Simple forms

  • Binary has two principal sections, commonly AB; material need not be wholly unrelated. Ternary commonly uses ABA or ABA′, while rondo returns to a refrain between episodes, such as ABACA or ABACABA. Letters describe relationships at a selected structural level, not every note or phrase.
  • Strophic settings reuse substantially the same music for successive stanzas, with modified strophic allowing variation. Through-composed settings develop without that same complete recurring stanza setting, but can still reuse motifs or local material. A single repeat is insufficient to classify the whole setting.

Variations

  • Theme and variations presents a theme with related transformations in melody, rhythm, harmony, texture or other elements. Relationships can be retained while surface details change; a literal repeat alone does not show variation.
  • Ground bass is a recurring bass pattern, often supporting changing upper parts. It occurs in important Baroque examples and other contexts. It is a pattern rather than simply a long held pedal note, and can provide a basis for improvisation as well as written variation.

Popular forms

  • In many verse–chorus songs, verses share music with changing lyrics and choruses return with recognisable music and words. A bridge contrasts or connects; middle eight is a familiar type/name rather than proof of exactly eight bars. Intro and outro are optional opening and closing passages.
  • A common twelve-bar blues uses I, IV and V, often with dominant-seventh colours. The table gives one variant with a V7 turnaround; other turnarounds, substitutions and lengths exist. Not every blues is twelve bars. AABA with four eight-bar sections is one thirty-two-bar model; ABAC and varied section lengths require separate evidence.

Classical forms

  • Sonata form describes thematic and tonal organisation within a movement: an exposition presents material and tonal relationships, a development explores them, and a recapitulation returns/reworks them with a tonal resolution. Introductions, codas, repeats and altered layouts may occur. A sonata is also a genre of work and does not mean the same thing as sonata form.
  • Minuet and trio commonly forms a larger ABA design, with internal sections and repeats. Trio names the contrasting section, not necessarily three performers. A concerto may highlight a soloist or group with an ensemble; a symphony commonly has several movements but does not require exactly four. Fugue develops a subject through structured contrapuntal entries and treatment, rather than naming every imitative passage.

Describing structure

  • State the work, movement and structural level being discussed. Label related sections consistently, use A′ for a meaningful varied return where helpful, and cite specific musical evidence for boundaries and relationships. Repeats within a section do not automatically create a new principal section.
  • A coda is a closing passage; an introduction opens the music. Form can support familiarity, contrast or a sense of return, but subjective balance or satisfaction is not guaranteed by a letter plan. The tables are written teaching models and do not claim to analyse an unavailable recording.
