수업 노트

What Component 3 Is

  • Component 3 is the optional second route for Cambridge IGCSE First Language English.
  • Paper 1 is compulsory; you then either take Paper 2 or complete a coursework portfolio.
  • Coursework gives you the freedom and scope to improve your writing over time, rather than in timed exam conditions.
  • You can choose topics of personal interest to you.
  • You can edit, revise and correct your work independently so you submit something of the highest possible quality.

Portfolio Structure and Marks

  • You complete three written assignments, and the portfolio as a whole is worth 80 marks.
  • Each assignment should be about 500–800 words in length.
  • Assignment 1 (30 marks): writing to discuss, argue and/or persuade in response to a text or texts.
  • Assignment 2 (25 marks): writing to describe.
  • Assignment 3 (25 marks): writing to narrate.
  • The assignments may be completed in any order.

How the Marks Are Split

  • Total marks for writing = 65.
  • Total marks for reading = 15, tested in Assignment 1 only.
  • Because most marks come from writing, the writing assessment objectives carry the greatest weight.
  • The portfolio tests writing objectives W1–W5 and, for Assignment 1, reading objectives R1–R5.

Assignment 1: Discuss, Argue or Persuade

  • This is a piece of directed writing in response to a text or texts.
  • The texts should be about two sides of A4 in total.
  • The texts may consist of facts, opinions and/or arguments which you select, analyse and evaluate, and integrate into your own views.
  • You must evaluate and develop the information in the text(s), using some of the same skills as Paper 1 Question 4.
  • You write a discursive, argumentative or persuasive response in your own words.
  • The response must be in one of these formats: speech, letter, article or report.

Assignment 2: Descriptive Writing

  • This is a piece of descriptive writing.
  • You must develop ideas and images that create a convincing, well-defined picture.
  • Your description should use varieties of focus.

Assignment 3: Narrative Writing

  • This is a piece of narrative writing.
  • You must craft a well-defined plot.
  • You develop the plot with features of fiction writing, such as setting and characterisation.

Writing Assessment Objectives (W1–W5)

  • W1: articulate experience and express what is thought, felt and imagined — write convincingly to convey real and imagined experiences, thoughts and feelings.
  • W2: organise and structure facts, ideas and opinions for deliberate effect — sequence and connect ideas to interest and influence your reader.
  • W3: use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures appropriate to context — use them deliberately to achieve certain effects.
  • W4: use language appropriate to purpose and to engage the audience — vary your writing to suit the purpose, audience and form of the task.
  • W5: make accurate use of spelling, punctuation and grammar — write accurately, avoiding errors.

Reading Assessment Objectives (R1–R5)

  • R1: demonstrate understanding of explicit meanings — show you understand the obvious meanings in a text.
  • R2: demonstrate understanding of implicit meanings and attitudes — recognise hints and suggestions to understand hidden meanings and the writer's attitudes.
  • R3: analyse, evaluate and develop facts, ideas and opinions, using appropriate support from the text — explain and develop them, referring to evidence such as quotations.
  • R4: demonstrate understanding of how writers achieve effects and influence readers — consider the deliberate choices a writer has made and why.
  • R5: select and use information for specific purposes — choose relevant and appropriate information from a text to answer different questions.

Rules and Requirements

  • Your work may be handwritten or word-processed.
  • Dictionaries may be used for the coursework portfolio.
  • Your portfolio must include the first draft of one of the three assignments submitted.
  • The first draft does not contribute to the final internally assessed mark or the externally moderated mark.
  • The portfolio must also include the text(s) used for Assignment 1.
