수업 노트

The story at a glance

  • "A Warning to the Curious" (1925) by M. R. James (1862–1936), a Cambridge scholar and master of the English ghost story.
  • Set at Seaburgh, a quiet resort on England's east coast (based on Aldeburgh, Suffolk).
  • A nervous young man, Paxton, has dug up an Anglo-Saxon crown — one of three holy crowns said to protect the coast from invasion — and is haunted by its guardian.
  • With the narrator and his friend Henry Long, he puts it back; the next day he is lured along the beach and killed.
  • Key ideas: curiosity and its punishment, the past guarding the present, sacrilege, national legend, terror through suggestion.

Frame and setting

  • A frame narrative: an outer narrator describes Seaburgh — marshes, heath, fir woods, gorse, a flint church, windmills, a martello tower — then retells a story told to him by a man he once helped.
  • The inner narrator and Henry Long stay at the Bear for golf in April; the hotel is almost empty.
  • The long, affectionate description of the landscape ("word-painting") makes the setting real and ordinary before horror enters.
  • The mound with its knot of firs, overlooking the sea, becomes the site of the crown.
  • The frame adds authenticity and a sense of a true tale passed on — "it's only my word you've got to take for all this: Long's dead".

Paxton's story

  • Paxton — "rather a rabbity anæmic subject" — visits the church at Froston; an old man tells him the three crowns on the arms of East Anglia mean "three 'oly crowns" buried to keep invaders off.
  • The rector explains: one was dug up at Rendlesham in 1687 and melted down; one lies under the sea; one remains. The Ager family were its guardians; the last, William Ager, died young of cold and night-watching.
  • By "a sort of fate", Paxton finds Ager's grave and a prayer-book with the Ager names, leading him to the cottage and the mound.
  • Digging a secret tunnel at night, he feels a presence — a man glimpsed only "with the tail of my eye", "something scraping at my back".
  • When he pulls out the crown, "a sort of cry" behind him — "desolate" and "horribly threatening". "I've never been alone since I touched it."

Returning the crown

  • They see the silver crown, set with antique gems — "an actual Anglo-Saxon crown". Paxton will not let them touch it.
  • In the passage they sense "a shadow, or more than a shadow"; strangers look behind Paxton; a guard held a door open "as if there was somebody else coming".
  • Under the Paschal full moon they carry the crown back through the churchyard; Paxton claws at the mound with bleeding hands and replaces it.
  • They feel "a restrained hostility very near us, like a dog on a leash".
  • Long sees a coat left on the mound — "That wasn't my coat", says Paxton; when they look back, it has gone. Paxton knows: "I'm not forgiven."

Paxton's death

  • Next afternoon Paxton hears the friends calling from the path and runs out — but they were not there.
  • They follow along the beach as a sea-mist rises, though the sun still shines.
  • In the sand: Paxton's shoe-prints — and older prints of a bare foot, "one that showed more bones than flesh".
  • At the old battery by the martello tower they hear "a breathless, a lungless laugh". Paxton lies dead: "His mouth was full of sand and stones, and his teeth and jaws were broken to bits."
  • The inquest records wilful murder by persons unknown; the narrators hint only at "a man called William Ager". The narrator has never returned to Seaburgh.

Methods, themes and comparisons

  • Suggestion over showing: the guardian is glimpsed sideways, felt, heard — never fully described; the reader's imagination does the work.
  • Understated, scholarly narrators make the horror more believable.
  • Foreshadowing: "I wish I'd left it alone"; "the snares of death overtook him".
  • Setting and weather: moonlight, mist, empty beach — isolation at the key moments.
  • The title is a moral: curiosity about the past can be deadly.
  • Themes: curiosity punished, sacrilege, duty and guardianship, England's legendary past.
  • Section B pairings: "Gabriel-Ernest" (the supernatural), "Death of the Laird's Jock" (legend and the past), "The Copper Beeches" (suspense).
