What is a Story?

  • A story is a series of events that can be true or made up.
  • Stories can be told in prose, verse, or script.
  • Stories are meant to amuse or inform the audience.
  • Story structure is how we organize the events of a story.
  • Good structure helps readers understand and enjoy the story.

The Shape of a Story

  • A story usually has five parts: opening, build-up, problem, resolution, and ending.
  • The opening introduces the characters and the setting.
  • The build-up adds details and creates interest.
  • The problem (or climax) is the most exciting part where the main conflict happens.
  • The resolution solves the problem.
  • The ending wraps up the story and shows how things end.

Setting and Narrator

  • The setting is where and when the story happens.
  • The narrator is the person telling the story.
  • The narrator can be a character in the story or someone outside.
  • Point of view means whose eyes we see the story through.
  • A clear setting helps readers imagine the story world.

Developing Characters

  • Characters are the people or animals in the story.
  • Show what characters are like through their actions, dialogue, and description.
  • Dialogue is the words characters say.

  • Use short sentences to make the story feel fast and exciting.
  • Choose strong words to create mood.
  • Vary sentence length to keep readers interested.
  • Tension makes readers want to know what happens next.

Using Paragraphs

  • Paragraphs help organize your story.
  • Start a new paragraph when the time changes.
  • Start a new paragraph when the place changes.
  • Start a new paragraph when a new event happens.
  • Paragraphs make your story easier to read.

Planning with a Story Map

  • Before writing, plan your story.
  • A story map is a graphic organizer that helps you plan.
  • A story mountain is a picture of the story's shape.
  • It shows the opening, build-up, problem, resolution, and ending.
  • Planning helps you write a clear and complete story.

Editing Your Draft

  • After writing, read your story again.
  • Check for mistakes in spelling and grammar.
  • Make sure your story makes sense.
