Notas de aula

What evaluation means

  • To evaluate is to judge how successfully a writer achieves an effect or purpose, giving your own view supported by evidence.
  • Evaluation questions often give a statement, such as "The writer makes the reader feel sympathy for the narrator." You decide how far you agree.
  • You should look at methods (language, structure, tone) and how well they work.

Forming a judgement

  • Start with a clear personal judgement: "I agree to a large extent because...", "I partly agree...", "I disagree because...".
  • Select precise evidence and explain how it supports the judgement. There is no fixed number of quotations for every task.
  • Read the scope carefully. Consider how effects develop across the specified passage, which may be only selected lines rather than the whole text.

Evaluative language

  • Use words that show judgement: "effectively", "convincingly", "powerfully", "less successfully", "creates a vivid picture", "to a large extent".
  • A qualified judgement can be useful when the evidence supports it. Do not invent a weakness or disagreement merely to appear balanced.

Avoiding common mistakes

  • Do not retell the story or list features without judging them.
  • Do not give a judgement with no evidence.
  • Stay with the statement in the question; use its key words in your answer.
