Notas de aula

Deindustrialisation and post-industrial economy

  • Coal mining is primary extraction; steelmaking, textiles and shipbuilding are manufacturing. The long-term fall in industrial employment reflects technology, competition, changing demand and business and policy choices, with different local effects.
  • A post-industrial economy has a large service share while manufacturing continues. Employment, employment share and real output can move differently; do not infer annual output decline from job losses alone.

Growth areas

  • Science parks may benefit from research institutions, skills and collaboration. Cambridge Science Park is one park; Silicon Fen is a wider cluster. Business parks can accommodate offices or other businesses without a research specialism.
  • London’s finance role reflects networks, skills and connections. Other cities also support service and research activity. The attached imagined montage combines industrial and service themes without representing an accurate skyline or measured before-and-after change.

North-south divide

  • The north–south divide is a broad simplification of regional differences in indicators such as productivity or income. Compare like measures and dates and examine inequalities within regions; it does not describe every resident.
  • Transport and business incentives may improve access, but outcomes depend on location, fares, skills, housing and complementary investment. The Elizabeth line central section opened on 24 May 2022, with later integration stages. The government announced HS2 Phase 2 cancellation in October 2023; use the revised scope rather than an obsolete original route as if completed.

The UK in the wider world

  • The UK’s global links include trade, investment, research and migration. Outsourcing means contracting to another organisation; offshoring means moving activity abroad. They may overlap but are not synonyms.
  • The UK left the EU on 31 January 2020 and its transition ended on 31 December 2020. Trade continued under changed arrangements. Evaluate specific costs, procedures and opportunities using dated evidence instead of claiming every sector was affected identically.

Rural changes

  • Farms may diversify through processing, visitor services or other activities, while remote work and commuting change some rural economies. These possibilities depend on access, skills, markets and infrastructure.
  • Counter-urbanisation can alter housing demand and service needs. Evaluate benefits alongside affordability, transport, land use and the circumstances of existing residents; a larger commuting population is not automatically a benefit for everyone.
