Notas de aula
Routine: match pronoun and present form
- Me despierto means I wake up; me levanto I get up; me ducho I shower; me visto I get dressed; me acuesto I go to bed. These are selected routine forms, not a requirement that everyone follows the same day.
- Match me, te, se, nos, os or se with the subject and verb. Useful changes include despierto (e → ie), acuesto (o → ue) and visto (e → i); nosotros forms include nos despertamos, nos acostamos and nos vestimos.
Routine forms and meanings
Food and drink words in context
- Pan is bread, queso cheese, pollo chicken, pescado fish, carne meat, verduras vegetables and fruta fruit. Zumo de naranja means orange juice; jugo is another regional word for juice.
- El agua is feminine despite singular el directly before stressed a: agua fría, mucha agua. A quantity phrase uses de: un vaso de agua, una botella de agua, un kilo de manzanas. Food examples do not prescribe what the learner must eat.
Food and quantity phrases
At a restaurant: distinguish the request and the bill
- Quisiera una ensalada, por favor is a softened request; quisiera is formally an imperfect-subjunctive querer form used here for I would like. La carta or el menú can refer to the menu; la cuenta is the bill in this setting.
- De primero, de segundo and de postre mean for the first course, second/main course and dessert in a stated multi-course menu. ¡Buen provecho! wishes someone an enjoyable meal; not every meal has these courses.
Restaurant phrases in context
Times and sequence do different jobs
- A las ocho y media is at 8:30; a las nueve menos cuarto at 8:45; a la una at one; a mediodía at midday. A clock phrase needs context to distinguish morning from evening when not otherwise specified.
- Primero is first, luego then/later and después afterwards. Por fin often means at last after a wait; por último or finalmente can mark a neutral final item. Do not attach one identical English meaning to every context.
Time and sequence
Meal names vary by setting
- Desayuno is breakfast and cena the evening meal. Comida can mean food generally or a main/midday meal in context; almuerzo and merienda also have regional meal uses.
- In the supplied example, tomo la merienda a media tarde refers to an afternoon snack. An invented schedule teaches the language without claiming that every Spanish speaker eats the same number of meals at identical times.
Meal words in a stated context
Likes, preferences and negatives
- Me gusta el pescado and me encanta el chocolate use singular agreement with the thing liked. Me gustan las manzanas uses plural gustan with plural las manzanas; me identifies the experiencer rather than the grammatical subject.
- Prefiero comer pollo uses an infinitive after prefiero. No como carne is a general negative statement; an article may be possible with a specified referent in other contexts, so do not ban la carne in every negative sentence.
Agree with the thing liked
Describe food without prescribing a diet
- Sano/sana means healthy in an appropriate description, equilibrado/equilibrada balanced, dulce sweet, graso/grasa fatty, vegetariano/vegetariana vegetarian and vegano/vegana vegan. Adjectives follow the described noun’s gender and number where applicable.
- Creo que una dieta variada es importante para mi salud is an invented opinion whose stated reason is health. This language lesson does not prescribe portions, label an unseen meal suitable for a particular person or establish all its ingredients.
Food-description vocabulary
Build an opinion and an invented routine
- En mi opinión, creo que and me parece que introduce a view. Add a reason with porque and distinguish your speaker’s preference from a claim about everyone’s food or routines.
- Me despierto a las siete. Después me levanto y me visto. Luego desayuno. This invented model supplies routine forms, time and sequence; other coherent routines are valid and no private timetable is required.
