Notas de aula

What Was the Cold War?

  • The Cold War was a period of international geopolitical rivalry between the United States (US) and the Soviet Union (USSR) and their allies.
  • It began in the aftermath of the Second World War and ended with the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991.
  • It is called a 'cold' war because there was no direct fighting between the two superpowers.
  • Instead, each side supported opposing sides in regional conflicts known as proxy wars.
  • The rivalry was also expressed through an arms race in conventional and nuclear weapons, technological rivalries such as the Space Race, espionage, propaganda, embargoes, and sports diplomacy.

Capitalism vs Communism

  • The US and its allies formed the capitalist Western Bloc.
  • The USSR and its allies formed the communist Eastern Bloc.
  • The two sides struggled for ideological and economic influence around the world.
  • The US followed a policy of containment of communism, declared in the Truman Doctrine of 1947.
  • The USSR installed satellite governments in its occupied territories in Eastern Europe and North Korea by 1949.

The Iron Curtain and the Division of Germany

  • After World War II, Europe (and Germany) was politically divided by an 'Iron Curtain'.
  • The Berlin Blockade of 1948 to 1949 was an early confrontation over the divided city of Berlin.
  • The Berlin Wall was built to divide the city, becoming a symbol of the Cold War.
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 contributed to the revolutions in the Eastern Bloc.

Alliances and Treaties

  • The US founded the NATO military alliance in 1949.
  • The Soviet-led Warsaw Pact was formed in 1955 as a matching alliance.
  • The Marshall Plan was launched in 1948 to assist Western Europe's economic recovery.
  • The US and USSR signed a series of treaties limiting their nuclear arsenals during a period known as détente in the 1970s.

The Nuclear Arms Race

  • The US used its first nuclear weapon on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945.
  • The USSR tested its first nuclear weapon in 1949, four years after the US.
  • The Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962 is widely considered the closest the Cold War came to escalating into nuclear war.
  • It began after deployments of US missiles in Europe and Soviet missiles in Cuba.

Proxy Wars: Korea and Vietnam

  • The Korean War of 1950 to 1953 ended in a stalemate.
  • The Vietnam War of 1955 to 1975 ended in a North Vietnamese victory.
  • Both powers used economic aid to win the loyalty of non-aligned countries.
  • As nearly all colonial states underwent decolonization, many became Third World battlefields of the Cold War.

Other Key Events and Crises

  • The Cuban Revolution of 1959 installed the first communist regime in the Western Hemisphere.
  • The USSR crushed the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and invaded Czechoslovakia in 1968.
  • The Sino-Soviet split by 1961 brought the USSR and China to the brink of war amid a border conflict in 1969.
  • In 1972, the US initiated diplomatic contacts with China.
  • In 1979, the toppling of US-allied governments in Iran and Nicaragua and the outbreak of the Soviet–Afghan War again raised tensions.

The End of the Cold War

  • In 1985, Mikhail Gorbachev became leader of the USSR and expanded political freedoms.
  • This contributed to the revolutions of 1989 in the Eastern Bloc.
  • The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 was a key moment.
  • The collapse of the USSR in 1991 ended the Cold War.
