Capital Letters

Always start a sentence with a capital letter.
Use a capital for the word I (for example, 'I am happy').
Use capitals for proper nouns – names of people, places, days, months, and holidays (for example, 'Anna', 'London', 'Monday', 'July').
Don't use capitals for common nouns like 'dog' or 'city' unless they start a sentence.

End Marks

A full stop (.) ends a telling sentence (for example, 'The cat is sleeping.').
A question mark (?) ends a question (for example, 'Where is my book?').
An exclamation mark (!) ends a sentence that shows strong feeling (for example, 'Watch out!').
Choose the right end mark to show the type of sentence you are writing.

Commas in Lists

Use a comma (,) to separate items in a list (for example, 'I like apples, bananas, and oranges.').
In a list of three or more, put a comma after each item except the last one.
You can use a comma before the 'and' in a list (this is called the Oxford comma).
Commas in lists make your writing clearer and easier to read.

Commas After Fronted Phrases

A fronted phrase is a group of words that comes before the main part of a sentence.
Put a comma after a fronted phrase (for example, 'After school, I do my homework.').
