What is Place Value?

  • Place value means the value of a digit depends on its position (place) in a number.
  • In the number 4,321, the digit 4 is in the thousands place, so it means 4,000.
  • Each place is worth ten times the place to its right. For example, 1 hundred = 10 tens.
  • The Hindu–Arabic numeral system (the one we use) is a base-ten system, using digits 0 to 9.
  • Numbers like 10,000 have a 1 in the ten-thousands place and zeros in the other places.

Reading and Writing Numbers

  • You can write numbers in numerals (like 5,678) or in words (like five thousand, six hundred seventy-eight).
  • Use a comma to separate thousands: 10,000 is ten thousand.
  • When writing in words, say the thousands, then the hundreds, then the tens and ones.
  • Example: 8,204 is eight thousand, two hundred four.
  • Practice with numbers up to 10,000 and beyond, like 12,345.

The Value of Each Digit

  • In 3,456, the digit 3 is in the thousands place, so its value is 3,000.
  • The digit 4 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 400.
  • The digit 5 is in the tens place, so its value is 50.
  • The digit 6 is in the ones place, so its value is 6.
  • A digit in one place is ten times the same digit in the place to its right. For example, in 2,222, the first 2 is 10 times the second 2.

Comparing and Ordering Numbers

  • Use < (less than) and > (greater than) to compare numbers.
  • To compare, look at the digits from left to right. The first place where they differ tells you which is bigger.
  • Example: 4,567 < 4,657 because 5 < 6 in the hundreds place.
  • Order numbers from smallest to largest or largest to smallest.
  • Remember: the alligator mouth opens toward the bigger number.

Rounding Numbers

  • Rounding means making a number simpler but close in value.
  • To round to the nearest 10, look at the ones digit. If it is 5 or more, round up; if 4 or less, round down.
  • To round to the nearest 100, look at the tens digit.
  • To round to the nearest 1,000, look at the hundreds digit.
  • Example: 3,472 rounded to the nearest 100 is 3,500 (because 7 in the tens place is 5 or more).

Counting and Finding More or Less

  • You can count in multiples of 10, 100, or 1,000.
  • To find 1,000 more than a number, add 1,000. To find 1,000 less, subtract 1,000.
  • Example: 1,000 more than 4,500 is 5,500.
  • Example: 1,000 less than 8,200 is 7,200.
  • Counting in multiples helps you see patterns in place value.

Negative Numbers on a Number Line

  • Negative numbers are less than zero, like -5.
  • You can see them on a number line to the left of zero.
  • An example is temperature: -10°C is colder than 0°C.
  • When counting backwards past zero, you go into negative numbers.
  • The further left on the number line, the smaller the number.

History of Place Value

  • The Babylonians used a base-60 system, which is why we have 60 minutes in an hour.
  • The Inca used knots in cords (quipu) to store numbers in a decimal system.
  • Roman numerals are not place value; they add values (like CCXXVIII = 228).
  • Our base-ten system came from India and spread through Arab mathematicians.
  • The decimal point (radix point) lets us write fractions like 3.5.
