பாட குறிப்புகள்

Sentence types and forms

  • Simple sentences have one clause: "Rain fell." Compound sentences join clauses with a conjunction (and, but, or): "Rain fell and the streets emptied." Complex sentences have a main clause and a subordinate clause: "Although it was late, she kept walking."
  • Minor sentences do not follow the usual complete main-clause pattern: “Silence.” is one example. Some fragments contain verb forms, so “no verb” is not a universal definition.
  • Sentence functions: statements, questions, commands (imperatives) and exclamations.

Sentence length and rhythm

  • Short sentences may emphasise a moment, pause a flow or accelerate a sequence. Longer sentences may create momentum or detailed deliberation. Link the effect to the actual passage rather than a fixed length rule.
  • A list or triplet (rule of three) gives rhythm and emphasis. Repetition can show obsession or persuade.

Rhetorical devices

  • Direct address ("you") speaks to the reader. Rhetorical questions need no answer. Emotive language stirs feeling. Imperatives command ("Act now").
  • An anecdote is a brief account of an incident, often personal. Credible evidence and accurately presented statistics can support persuasion; repetition, contrast and hyperbole may shape the argument’s effect.
  • Tone is an attitude or feeling conveyed, such as concern, irony or urgency. Register concerns language choices suited to context, including degrees of formality; the concepts can interact.

Analysing effect

  • Link the form to the effect: "The short sentence 'Nothing.' creates a sudden silence that makes the reader feel the narrator's emptiness."
