பாட குறிப்புகள்
What is an NEE?
- Newly emerging economy is a course term for economic transformation and changing global connections. It has no single universal threshold equivalent to every statistical income classification. Nigeria is the named case study here; do not substitute a different country halfway through an answer.
- A country’s sectoral structure and growth vary across places and years. Increasing real output differs from development, which also concerns health, education, access, opportunities, distribution and environmental conditions. Do not assume every country moves through one inevitable sequence.
Growth and development
Case study: Nigeria
- Nigeria lies in West Africa on the Gulf of Guinea and became independent from Britain in 1960. Abuja is the federal capital; Lagos is a major commercial and port centre. Avoid undated economy or city rankings because results depend on year, currency and boundaries.
- Crude oil has been important to merchandise exports, while agriculture, manufacturing, banking, telecommunications and cultural services also matter. Nollywood is the Nigerian film industry. Export value, GDP, government revenue and employment are different measures; a share in one does not establish the same share in another.
- TNC case studies must identify the entity and date. On 13 March 2025 Shell announced completion of its SPDC sale to Renaissance, exiting that onshore oil-production subsidiary while retaining other Nigerian interests. Historical teaching about SPDC must not imply ownership remained unchanged. The attached montage is an imagined collection of activities, not a photograph or accurate map of Lagos.
Imagined economic activities

Changes in industry
- Primary activity obtains resources; secondary activity transforms materials and includes manufacturing and construction; tertiary activity provides services. Thus oil extraction is primary while refining is secondary. Some school schemes distinguish knowledge-intensive research as quaternary.
- Investment decisions can reflect resources, customers, skills, productivity, transport, regulation and costs. Lasting foreign investment with significant influence is FDI; it differs from selling exports or holding a small foreign share portfolio. Local jobs, wages, suppliers, training and tax arrangements determine how benefits spread.
- Diversification can reduce concentration in one product or market, but requires viable infrastructure, skills, power, finance and demand. Industrial or service opportunities can attract urban migrants; urban growth also reflects natural increase and boundary changes, and services may fail to keep pace.

Effects on people and the environment
- Growth can create jobs and infrastructure while concentrating gains among some groups or places. Compare wages, working conditions, supplier links, tax revenue, service access and environmental effects before reaching a judgement. A higher national total alone cannot establish that everyone is better off.
- UNEP’s 2011 Ogoniland assessment documented serious pollution affecting water, land and ecosystems after decades of oil operations. This provides dated, region-specific evidence for environmental and livelihood concerns. Each spill’s causes and legal responsibility need investigation; the imagined mangrove scene is not evidence of a real event or a named firm’s liability.
- A young population can contribute future workers and demand, but gains require health, education and decent employment. Housing pressures and informal development vary by locality; describe conditions rather than assuming all informal settlements are identical.
Imagined mangrove contamination

International aid
- Aid may support healthcare, education, infrastructure or emergency response, depending on the programme. Distinguish grants, loans, investment and trade. Benefits depend on local priorities, implementation, maintenance and accountability; a generic judgement that aid always creates dependence is inadequate.
- For evaluation, state the project, place, date, goal and evidence. Consider who decides, who gains, ongoing costs, debt terms where relevant and environmental effects. Company sources can establish corporate announcements, while independent assessments and local evidence are needed to evaluate wider impacts.
