பாட குறிப்புகள்

Regular verbs

  • Spielen: ich spiele, du spielst, er/sie/es spielt, wir spielen, ihr spielt, sie/Sie spielen. Formal Sie uses the plural verb form even when addressing one person. The subject determines person and number.
  • Many verbs follow this pattern, but check the actual stem: arbeiten gives du arbeitest and ihr arbeitet; heißen gives du heißt. Infinitives in -eln or -ern need their own stem handling, so remove-en is not a universal spelling algorithm.

Irregular verbs

These changes do not extend to wir fahren or ihr esst.

Modal verbs

  • Present indicative modal models: ich kann, du kannst, er kann; ich muss, du musst, er muss; ich darf, du darfst, er darf; ich will, du willst, er will; ich soll, du sollst, er soll; ich mag, du magst, er mag. Plural models include wir können, ihr könnt, sie können and wir müssen, ihr müsst, sie müssen.
  • Ich kann schwimmen places a bare infinitive without zu after finite modal kann in this simple main clause. Möchte is Konjunktiv II of mögen commonly expressing a wish/request: ich möchte ein Buch. A modal can occur without an explicit infinitive in a suitable context; this example is not an every-sentence law.

Keep modal and meaning together

Keep modal and meaning togetherModelMeaning hereIch kann schwimmen.I can swim.Du musst arbeiten. You have to work.Ich darf gehen.I am allowed to go.Ich möchte ein Buch.I would like a book.

Separable verbs

  • Ich stehe um sieben Uhr auf and er sieht abends fern place the separable prefix at the end of these simple finite main-clause brackets. Anrufen gives ich rufe dich an; einkaufen gives ich kaufe ein.
  • With a modal, ich muss früh aufstehen keeps the infinitive together. The written subordinate model weil ich früh aufstehe also keeps finite aufstehe together. Identify the clause and verb construction before deciding whether to split the prefix.

Verb second

  • Heute spiele ich Fußball and am Wochenende gehe ich ins Kino use finite verbs in second constituent position. Am Wochenende is one time constituent despite its two words; nach der Schule similarly contains three words.
  • An opening time constituent is followed by the finite verb and then the subject in these models. Verb-first yes/no questions and written subordinate clauses use other patterns, so verb-second is not a rule for every possible German clause.

Negatives

  • Ich habe keinen Bruder uses a negative article before masculine accusative Bruder; ich habe keine Schwester uses feminine accusative keine. Endings depend on case, gender and number, not simply the owner.
  • Ich spiele nicht gern Tennis negates enjoyment. Nicht may negate a whole clause or focus on a constituent, as nicht heute, sondern morgen. Nie means never and nichts nothing. Do not teach noun versus verb as a complete rule covering every possible negation.

Read the negative in context

Questions

  • Spielst du Tennis? is the requested verb-first yes/no pattern. Wann spielst du Tennis? has question word, finite verb and subject. Wer asks who, was what, wo where, wann when, warum why, wie how and wie viel how much.
  • Du spielst Tennis? can work as an intonation or echo question. It differs from the verb-first target rather than being universally ungrammatical. Match the requested question pattern, subject and intended information.

Using the present

  • Present indicative can refer to now, habits or future context: jetzt lerne ich, jeden Tag lese ich, nächstes Jahr fahre ich nach Berlin. Future reference is not restricted to the near future or dependent on repeating a time word in every conversation turn.
  • Ich lerne seit zwei Jahren Deutsch describes learning begun in the past and continuing now. Seit zwei Jahren is dative in this duration phrase. The original routine model adds nach der Schule kaufe ich ein and ich kann kochen, aber ich koche nicht gern: ability and enjoyment differ.
