பாட குறிப்புகள்
Sportsmanship and gamesmanship
- Sportsmanship means honest fair play and respect for opponents, officials and the contest. Gamesmanship seeks a competitive advantage at the edge of or against its spirit; the common bending-rules definition is a teaching shorthand. Some examples, such as unreasonable delay or abuse, can also be prohibited by formal rules.
- Cheating is a deliberate rule breach seeking unfair advantage, whereas an accidental infringement does not by itself establish intent. The contract to compete is the shared expectation of a genuine fair contest within its rules and spirit. A label such as gamesmanship cannot excuse misconduct or discrimination.
Classify conduct with its context
Positive and negative deviance
- Positive deviance, in this PE sociological sense, means excessive conformity to sporting expectations. Pressure to compete despite injury is an example used to explain potentially harmful over-conformity, not behaviour to praise or imitate. Positive here does not mean safe or beneficial.
- Negative deviance departs from accepted rules or norms, such as deliberate cheating or violence. Context matters: ordinary lawful contact is different from misconduct. Health needs and appropriate assessment should not be overridden by an expectation that commitment means ignoring injury.
Deviance labels do not recommend behaviour
Drugs in sport
- Prohibited misuse may seek muscle/strength effects from anabolic agents, increased red-cell production from EPO, altered alertness from certain stimulants, fluid loss/masking from diuretics or reduced tremor from β blockers in precision tasks. Risks differ and can include cardiovascular, hormonal, psychological or dehydration/electrolyte harm. Some narcotic analgesics may mask pain but impair function and create dependence or respiratory risks; not all pain medicines are prohibited.
- The applicable WADA Prohibited List distinguishes all-times, in-competition and particular-sport restrictions and specific conditions. Medical use is a different context, potentially requiring an authorised TUE. A prescription alone is not permission. WADA coordinates standards and UKAD undertakes national anti-doping work; rules, education, testing and fair processes work together.
Misuse effects are not safe training methods
Violence
- Hooliganism refers to violent or disorderly spectator conduct; player misconduct and crowd risk also need activity-specific responses. Do not assume every fan or ordinary lawful contact is violent. Clear expectations and consistent responses can support a safer event.
- Trained stewards, suitable monitoring, safely managed areas and proportionate exclusion for misconduct can reduce specific risks. Measures must preserve safe exits, access and appropriate crowd flow. Assess the event’s actual layout and audience; no isolated measure such as a camera guarantees prevention.
Event controls need safe implementation
Rules and officials
- Officials apply rules impartially and manage safety and misconduct within their authority. Penalties and proper review procedures support the contest; respectful disagreement does not justify intimidation. A code of conduct supports expected behaviour but must be implemented consistently.
- VAR is football video assistance limited to reviewable incidents under the applicable protocol; the referee retains the final decision. Video can reduce some errors while still requiring interpretation, time and resources. Other sports have different technologies and review systems; do not treat VAR as a universal video system for all decisions.
Technology assists an official process
Role models
- Role models can influence expectations through honest, respectful and inclusive conduct on and off the field. This can challenge the idea that success excuses abuse or cheating. The effect varies, and examples should not imply that all athletes behave badly or that visibility alone changes behaviour.
- Good organisational culture includes education, safe reporting routes and consistent accountability, rather than relying on one famous person. Use appropriate channels to raise a concern and avoid passing on discriminatory or threatening conduct as ordinary competitive banter.
Model conduct through choices
Ethics
- Ethical reasoning considers fairness, respect, honesty, inclusion, integrity and harm. Identify the rule or accepted convention and the people affected, then explain how a choice preserves or undermines a genuine fair contest. A loophole or popularity does not by itself make a decision ethical.
- Pressure to win, selection or commercial rewards may explain a temptation without excusing harm or deception. Consider a justified alternative and the support needed to make it possible. Anti-doping can protect clean competitors and health while also requiring accurate checks and fair procedures.
Explain an ethical judgement
Etiquette
- Etiquette refers to accepted customs, such as acknowledging opponents after a contest. The gesture varies across sports, cultures and individual needs; respect need not require a particular handshake or physical contact. It differs from the written playing rules, although conduct can also be covered by a formal code.
- A code of conduct sets behavioural expectations and may specify responsibilities and consequences. Sporting customs must not be used to excuse abuse, pressure someone to ignore injury or exclude a participant. Check the relevant rules and context before deciding whether conduct is etiquette, an infringement or both.
Etiquette, rules and codes
Strict liability, treatment and prohibited methods
- Under strict liability athletes are responsible for prohibited substances in their samples even without intended cheating. Check medicines using official anti-doping resources and discuss necessary treatment and TUE requirements with qualified professionals. A supplement label, prescription or claim of being safe for athletes does not by itself settle the rules. Independent batch testing may reduce supplement risk but cannot remove it; WADA and UKAD do not approve supplements.
- Doping also covers prohibited methods, including certain blood manipulation intended to increase oxygen-carrying capacity, not only swallowing a drug. Such misuse can create serious clotting, cardiovascular or infection risks. This is a conceptual explanation, not a procedure to attempt. Legitimate healthcare and emergencies require qualified medical care and the applicable anti-doping process.
