  • A clear setting helps readers imagine the story world.

Developing Characters

  • Characters are the people or animals in the story.
  • Show what characters are like through their actions, dialogue, and description.
  • Dialogue is the words characters say.
  • Instead of saying 'she was brave', show her doing something brave.
  • Good characters feel real and interesting.

Building Tension

  • Tension is the excitement or suspense in a story.
  • Use short sentences to make the story feel fast and exciting.
  • Choose strong words to create mood.
  • Vary sentence length to keep readers interested.
  • Tension makes readers want to know what happens next.

Using Paragraphs

  • Paragraphs help organize your story.
  • Start a new paragraph when the time changes.

Planning with a Story Map
