Command words
- Read each command with the topic, marks, requested number of points and context. Identify/state generally require a concise relevant response; outline gives main features; explain develops how or why; analyse examines relationships and effects. Exact board definitions and mark schemes take precedence.
- Evaluate assesses relevant evidence to reach a supported judgement; justify supports a position or choice with reasons and evidence. Calculate uses the supplied data to obtain a result. These descriptions are guidance, not a claim that a fixed paragraph count fits every board.
Different tasks need different work
Chains of reasoning
- Develop a valid business mechanism: a change may affect a cost, customer response or operational outcome, which may then affect an objective. Explain the links, and qualify assumptions where needed. Connectives help communicate reasoning but do not replace it.
- Fictional Maple Bakery has a £200 monthly flour-storage bill and frequent deliveries. Smaller stocks may save storage spending and raise profit if other factors stay unchanged. However, a failed delivery could stop bread production and lose sales; JIT does not guarantee higher profit.
Develop a valid causal chain
Application
- Application uses relevant case circumstances to shape the explanation. A name alone, an irrelevant quotation or an invented fact does not show why a point matters for this business. Distinguish supplied facts from reasonable stated assumptions.
- Compare a generic claim about storage savings with a specific link to Maple Bakery reducing its £200 flour-storage bill. Then explain the constraint that it needs flour for daily production. Use context when the task requires it; standalone definition questions may not.
Application changes the reasoning
Extended answers
- Plan only as much as needed to answer the exact task. Select the important evidence and develop relevant analysis. Where evaluation is required, weigh the important alternatives, limitations or competing considerations and reach a justified judgement.
- An introduction, a set paragraph count and a token counter-argument are not universal requirements. A judgement can be conditional when uncertainty is explained. An extended analysis task does not automatically require an evaluate-style conclusion.
Quantitative skills
- Select the correct inputs and formula, show working and state final units and requested rounding. A fictional shop with £8,000 revenue and £6,500 total costs has £1,500 profit. Explain its relevance if the task requires interpretation.
- Check denominators, signs, comparable periods and whether figures are totals or per item. Distinguish cash from profit and percentage points from relative percentage change. A correct figure is evidence, not a complete expansion decision.
Calculate, then interpret
Time management
- Base timing on the actual paper duration, marks and approved allowances. Reserve appropriate time for reading, planning and checking, then use the remaining time and marks as a pacing guide. There is no universal one-minute-per-mark rule.
- In a hypothetical 100-minute, 80-mark paper, reserving 20 minutes leaves 80 minutes for answers, averaging 1 minute per mark. Practise with the actual board paper; do not treat this fictional exercise as its current examination timetable.
Build a time budget
Common errors
- Common weaknesses include answering a different task, giving unsupported claims, using a business name without meaningful application, and describing when evaluation is required. Check that causal links are plausible and supported.
- In calculations, check units, signs, the original percentage base and rounding. In extended responses, check that each paragraph advances the answer and any requested judgement is supported by the evidence.
Judgements
- Judge the significance of the relevant evidence against the business objective and constraints. Short- and long-term consequences, likelihood, affordability and stakeholders can matter, but use only criteria that help answer this question.
- For fictional Maple Bakery, reliable daily production may outweigh a small storage saving. A conditional recommendation to reduce stocks only with dependable delivery and a contingency is defensible if the stated evidence supports it. This illustrative answer is not an official marked exemplar.
