What comparison asks for
- Comparison questions ask how two writers present ideas, viewpoints or attitudes about the same subject, and how they do it.
- Make clear comparisons across the response. An integrated approach is useful, but there is no universal rule requiring both texts in every paragraph.
- Some qualifications pair nineteenth-century and later non-fiction. Follow your own task and specification; a text’s date does not determine its style.

Comparing perspectives
- Viewpoint is the writer's opinion; attitude is their feeling; perspective is their position or experience.
- Identify what each writer thinks, then compare: do they agree, partly agree, or contrast?
- Use comparative connectives: "similarly", "likewise", "whereas", "in contrast", "on the other hand", "both writers...".

Comparing methods
- Compare relevant methods such as word choice, imagery and structural shifts, explaining how they convey ideas or tone. Formality belongs to register; humour and seriousness concern tone.
- Support each text with a short quotation and explain the effect on the reader.
Structuring a response
- Plan around the task and available time, selecting developed points rather than a fixed number.
- For each shared point, connect evidence from both texts and explain the similarity or difference.
- Use context only when it helps interpret the supplied evidence. Do not invent dates or assume all older writing is formal.
