What is Rhetoric?

  • Rhetoric is the art of persuasion, one of the three ancient arts of discourse (the trivium) along with grammar and logic.
  • It studies the techniques speakers and writers use to inform, persuade, and motivate their audiences.
  • Aristotle defined rhetoric as 'the faculty of observing in any given case the available means of persuasion'.
  • Rhetoric provides heuristics — practical methods for understanding, discovering, and developing arguments for particular situations.
  • From Ancient Greece to the late 19th century, rhetoric played a central role in Western and Islamic education, training orators, lawyers, counsellors, historians, statesmen, and poets.

The Three Persuasive Appeals

  • Ethos is the appeal to the speaker's or writer's character, credibility, or authority.
  • Pathos is the appeal to the audience's emotions.
  • Logos is the appeal to logic and reason.
  • Aristotle identified these three appeals as the core ways a speaker or writer persuades an audience.
  • A strong argument often combines all three appeals, but one may dominate depending on the purpose and audience.

The Five Canons of Rhetoric

  • The five canons are the phases of developing a persuasive speech, first codified in classical Rome.
  • Invention is finding the arguments and material to use.
  • Arrangement is organising the material effectively.
  • Style is choosing the right language and phrasing.
  • Memory is learning and retaining the speech.
  • Delivery is how the speech is performed — voice, gesture, and presence.

Persuasive Devices: Questions and Address

  • A rhetorical question is asked for effect, not to get an answer; it makes the audience think and often implies an obvious answer.
  • Direct address uses words like 'you' or 'we' to speak straight to the audience, creating a personal connection.
  • Direct address can make the audience feel included, responsible, or challenged.

Persuasive Devices: Repetition and Pattern

  • Repetition repeats words or phrases to make key ideas memorable and to emphasise their importance.
  • The rule of three groups three words, phrases, or ideas together; the pattern is satisfying and memorable for audiences.
  • Repetition and the rule of three can build rhythm and make a speech or text more powerful.

Persuasive Devices: Evidence and Authority

  • Statistics use numbers and data to appeal to logic and make an argument seem factual and objective.
  • Expert opinion uses the views of a qualified person to add authority and credibility (ethos).
  • Anecdote is a short personal story that can make an argument relatable and emotionally engaging (pathos).
  • Using evidence well strengthens an argument, but evidence must be relevant and trustworthy to be persuasive.

Persuasive Devices: Emotion and Exaggeration

  • Emotive language uses words chosen to stir feelings such as fear, pity, anger, or hope.
  • Hyperbole is deliberate exaggeration used for emphasis or dramatic effect, not to be taken literally.
  • Emotive language and hyperbole appeal to pathos and can make an audience react strongly.

Counter-Argument

  • A counter-argument acknowledges an opposing view before responding to it.
  • Addressing the other side can make a speaker or writer seem fair, informed, and reasonable (ethos).
  • A strong counter-argument is followed by a rebuttal that shows why the original position is stronger.
  • Ignoring opposing views can make an argument seem weak or one-sided.

Identifying and Explaining Devices

  • To identify a device, look for the language feature itself — for example, a question that needs no answer, or a group of three.
  • To explain its effect, describe what it makes the audience think, feel, or do.
  • Link the device to the purpose: does it build trust (ethos), stir emotion (pathos), or appeal to reason (logos)?
  • Use precise terminology — name the device and then explain its impact on the audience.
  • A good explanation connects the device to the writer's overall argument or message.
