What are Word Classes?

  • A word class is a group of words that do the same job in a sentence.
  • Think of word classes as teams: each team has a special job.
  • The four main word classes are nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
  • Every word in a sentence belongs to a word class.
  • The same word can sometimes be in different classes, depending on how it is used.

Nouns

  • A noun is a naming word. It names a person, place, thing, or idea.
  • Examples: teacher, school, dog, happiness.
  • A common noun names any person, place, or thing, like city or boy.
  • A proper noun names a specific person, place, or thing and starts with a capital letter, like London or Sarah.
  • A collective noun names a group, like team, family, or flock.
  • A pronoun takes the place of a noun, like he, she, it, or they.
  • A possessive pronoun shows ownership, like mine, yours, or hers.

Verbs

  • A verb is a doing or being word. It tells what someone or something does or is.
  • Action verbs show an action, like run, jump, or write.
  • State verbs show a state or feeling, like be, have, or like.
  • Every sentence needs a verb.
  • Example: In 'The cat sleeps', the verb is sleeps.

Adjectives

  • An adjective describes a noun. It tells you more about it.
  • Adjectives can tell you size, color, shape, or how something feels.
  • Examples: big, red, round, soft.
  • In 'a happy child', the adjective is happy.
  • Using a stronger adjective can make your writing better, like enormous instead of big.

Adverbs

  • An adverb describes a verb, an adjective, or another adverb.
  • Adverbs often tell how, when, or where something happens.
  • Many adverbs end in -ly, like quickly, slowly, or happily.
  • Example: In 'She ran quickly', the adverb is quickly.
  • Adverbs can also describe adjectives, like in 'very tall'.

Spotting Word Classes

  • To find a word's class, look at how it is used in the sentence.
  • The same word can be a noun in one sentence and a verb in another.
  • Example: 'I fish in the lake' – here fish is a verb.
  • Example: 'The fish is big' – here fish is a noun.
  • Ask: Does it name something? (noun) Does it show action? (verb) Does it describe a noun? (adjective) Does it describe a verb? (adverb)

Other Word Classes

  • There are other word classes too, like prepositions and conjunctions.
  • A preposition shows where or when something is, like in, on, under, or before.
  • A conjunction joins words or sentences, like and, but, or because.
  • A relative pronoun like who, whose, which, or that connects a clause to a noun.
  • Example: 'The girl who won is my friend' – who is a relative pronoun.

Choosing Stronger Words

  • Good writers pick the most precise word to make their writing clear and exciting.
  • Instead of walked, you could use strolled, marched, or tiptoed.
  • Instead of nice, you could use kind, delightful, or amazing.
  • Instead of dog, you could use puppy, hound, or terrier.
  • Stronger words help the reader picture exactly what you mean.
