What is an Average?
- An average is a single number that stands for a whole group of numbers.
- It tells you the center or the most typical value in a set of data.
- There are three common averages: mean, median, and mode.
- The range is not an average, but it tells you how spread out the numbers are.
- Different averages are useful in different situations.
The Mean
- The mean is the most common average. It is sometimes called the arithmetic mean.
- To find the mean, add up all the numbers, then divide by how many numbers there are.
- Example: For the numbers 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, the mean is (2+3+4+7+9) ÷ 5 = 25 ÷ 5 = 5.
- The mean is like sharing the total equally among all the items.
- If one number is very large or very small, it can change the mean a lot.
The Median
- The median is the middle number when you put the numbers in order from smallest to largest.
- To find the median, first sort the numbers. If there is an odd number of values, the median is the middle one.
- If there is an even number of values, the median is the mean of the two middle numbers.
- Example: For 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, the median is 4.
- The median is good to use when there are outliers (very high or very low numbers) because it is not pulled by them.
The Mode
- The mode is the number that appears most often in a set of data.
- A set of numbers can have one mode, more than one mode, or no mode at all.
- Example: In 2, 3, 3, 5, 3, the mode is 3 because it appears three times.
- The mode is useful for categorical data (like favorite colors) where numbers are labels, not amounts.
- The mode tells you the most popular or common choice.
The Range
- The range is the difference between the largest and the smallest number in a set.
- To find the range, subtract the smallest number from the largest number.
- Example: For 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, the range is 9 − 2 = 7.
- The range tells you how spread out the data is.
- A small range means the numbers are close together; a large range means they are far apart.
Choosing the Best Average
- The mean is best when the numbers are fairly even and there are no extreme values.
- The median is best when there are outliers (very high or very low numbers) because it is not affected by them.
- The mode is best when you want to know the most common value, especially for categories.
- Example: For house prices, the median is often used because a few very expensive houses would make the mean too high.
- Always think about what you want to know before picking an average.
Reading and Drawing Data Displays
- A dot plot shows each data point as a dot above a number line. It is good for small sets of data.
- A bar chart uses bars to show how many times each category or value occurs.
- A pie chart shows parts of a whole as slices of a circle.
- A line graph shows how data changes over time, with points connected by lines.
- A histogram is like a bar chart but for continuous data, where bars touch each other.
Describing Data from a Graph
- When you look at a graph, describe the shape: is it symmetric or skewed?
- Spread means how much the data varies. You can see it by looking at the range or how wide the graph is.
- Look for clusters (groups of data close together) and gaps (empty spaces).
- Look for outliers – points that are far away from the rest.
- Use the graph to answer questions like: What is the most common value? What is the range?
Misleading Graphs
- A graph can be misleading if it is not drawn fairly.
- Watch out for broken axes (where the scale does not start at zero) – it can make differences look bigger.
- Watch out for uneven scales (where the intervals are not equal) – it can distort the data.
- Watch out for 3D effects or pictures that make one bar look bigger than it really is.
- Always check the labels and the scale before you trust a graph.
Finding a Missing Value
- If you know the mean and the number of values, you can find the total sum.
- To find the total sum, multiply the mean by the number of values: total = mean × count.
- If you know the total sum and all but one value, you can find the missing value by subtracting the known values from the total.
- Example: The mean of 5 numbers is 6, so the total is 5 × 6 = 30. If four numbers are 4, 5, 7, 8 (sum = 24), the missing number is 30 − 24 = 6.
- This method works for any set of numbers.
