Scope of this GCSE lesson

  • This lesson uses personal investigation to mean a sustained portfolio enquiry at GCSE. A brief may be assigned, negotiated or chosen; your personal response develops through informed decisions.
  • A-level Personal investigation is a separate qualification component with its own written requirements. Do not apply its essay length to this GCSE lesson. Use purposeful annotation and follow the actual GCSE course brief.

Choose a workable focus

  • A broad starting point such as change can lead to worn surfaces on familiar objects. Check that the focus offers variations you can explore with available time and materials.
  • Choose sources you can revisit with permission, such as your own key. A personal response does not require private autobiographical disclosure; ordinary objects and invented scenes are valid starting points.

Connected assessment evidence

  • Develop ideas using critical engagement with sources; refine through suitable material and process experiments; record observations and insights; present a response realising your intentions. These are paraphrased planning cues for the four GCSE objectives.
  • Objectives can overlap throughout the enquiry. A drawing, annotation and material test may each contribute to several objectives; do not treat them as four separate pages or stages completed only once.

An adaptable time plan

  • Plan observation, contextual analysis, practical comparisons, review and refinement against the actual deadline. Check access, materials and submission requirements before committing to a route.
  • A four-session example is observe; analyse and crop; compare media and review; refine and explain. It is illustrative, with room to return to an earlier activity if a test changes the question.

Analyse sources and use insights

  • Select a specific work and maker; examine visible choices and relevant context from reliable sources. Explain how an insight could affect a practical experiment rather than collecting biographies.
  • Identify sources and distinguish your observation from reproduced imagery. A labelled copy or study can analyse a method, but must not be presented as wholly original or replace developing your own response.

Review, select and explain

  • For an intention to emphasise wear, compare a wide crop with a close crop of an observed key. Use visible evidence to explain which serves the intention and what it loses.
  • Specific feedback can prompt a further test, such as an intermediate crop. Judge it against the intention rather than accepting it automatically; record why the plan or outcome changes.

Source roles and acknowledgement

  • An observation drawing of your own object provides first-hand evidence. Whether a source is primary depends on the enquiry: an original photograph, letter or artwork can be primary, including when encountered through a reproduction.
  • Commentary interprets other material and can supply useful contextual evidence. Identify maker, title or source details where available, distinguish your photographs from others’ and respect permission for people, objects and access.

Coherence and personal direction

  • Connect sources, tests and outcomes to an intention, including explained changes. Coherence allows contrasting experiments and does not require every piece to look the same.
  • Select evidence appropriate to the submission brief. Page count, expensive materials, fame of influences and decorative borders do not by themselves establish a sustained enquiry.
