Why test and evaluate?

  • Testing collects evidence under a defined procedure; evaluation interprets it against requirements. Define the question, relevant conditions and acceptance rule before collecting results. A test can support one limited conclusion without establishing every aspect of safety, usability or sustainability.
  • The model or prototype must suit the question. A card form model may reveal access issues but cannot establish final metal strength. Record the version, materials, geometry and conditions so the conclusion is traceable and appropriately limited.

Types of testing

  • Choose the method for the requirement: function, loading, wear, fatigue, user interaction or another appropriate question. Plan potentially damaging or load-based work using the required supervision and assessed procedure, with appropriate samples and controls. This lesson supplies no human-supporting test design.
  • Retain individual readings, units, conditions and unusual results. Repeats help assess variation under the same procedure; they do not automatically correct systematic bias or show the method addresses the intended question. Distinguish repeatability, accuracy and suitability of the test.
  • Invented example: a back-angle criterion is 60° ± 2° relative to a horizontal desk. Readings of 59°, 60° and 61° all lie within 58°–62°, with mean 60°. That supports only the angle criterion under the stated method, not stability, durability or all user interactions.

Gathering feedback

  • Use relevant participants and defined tasks, neutral wording and suitable observation. Separate what was seen or heard from the interpretation. Questionnaires and interviews can help explain a result, but comments alone do not measure every technical property.
  • The commissioning client may differ from the end user. Independent feedback can challenge assumptions but does not guarantee freedom from bias. Identify participant and context limitations; a small sample is not proof of every user’s experience.

Evaluating

  • Compare results against each defined criterion. Where evidence is sufficient, report whether it is met; a multi-part requirement may have mixed outcomes. If evidence is missing or unsuitable, say the requirement is not established and identify the next test rather than forcing a pass or fail.
  • Diagnose a result before selecting a change. A hypothetical model bracket failing at 60 N cannot demonstrate a 100 N requirement under the same procedure. Investigate the failure and method; a thicker member or different joint is a proposal requiring evaluation, not an automatic improvement.
  • Document a specific change, its evidence and predicted effect, then retest under suitable comparable conditions. Check cost, mass, access, manufacture and other trade-offs. Do not quietly relax a criterion merely to make the revised version appear successful.

Quality control

  • Dimension checks compare measurements with specified tolerances using appropriate equipment and a defined procedure. Instrument resolution, calibration and uncertainty matter; a check does not automatically establish true size or prove every other quality requirement.
  • Inspection or sampling can occur before, during or after production. Sampling assesses a subset and can miss defects, so report what was checked and the limits. Keep results and version records to support diagnosis and process improvement.

Writing a critical evaluation

  • Build the evaluation from criterion, method, result, interpretation and next action. Identify important strengths, weaknesses and uncertainties, then support a final judgement about the intended use. Equal-length positive and negative lists are not a substitute for reasoning.
  • For the draft 200 g phone-stand requirement, clarify phone geometry, angle reference and tolerance, surface, duration and the actions included in securely. A suitable supervised inert model can assess agreed behaviour; repeated angle readings alone do not establish resistance to slipping or tipping.
