What comparison asks for

  • Comparison questions ask how two writers present ideas, viewpoints or attitudes about the same subject, and how they do it.
  • Make clear comparisons across the response. An integrated approach is useful, but there is no universal rule requiring both texts in every paragraph.
  • Some qualifications pair nineteenth-century and later non-fiction. Follow your own task and specification; a text’s date does not determine its style.

Comparing perspectives

  • Viewpoint is the writer's opinion; attitude is their feeling; perspective is their position or experience.
  • Identify what each writer thinks, then compare: do they agree, partly agree, or contrast?
  • Use comparative connectives: "similarly", "likewise", "whereas", "in contrast", "on the other hand", "both writers...".

Comparing methods

  • Compare relevant methods such as word choice, imagery and structural shifts, explaining how they convey ideas or tone. Formality belongs to register; humour and seriousness concern tone.
  • Support each text with a short quotation and explain the effect on the reader.

Structuring a response

  • Plan around the task and available time, selecting developed points rather than a fixed number.
  • For each shared point, connect evidence from both texts and explain the similarity or difference.
  • Use context only when it helps interpret the supplied evidence. Do not invent dates or assume all older writing is formal.
