Check the required answer language, response format and type of detail. If preparation time with visible questions is allowed, predict whether the response needs a number, time, person, place or opinion, then verify it against the material.
Current AQA 8662 distinguishes listening comprehension and German dictation. This is one named assessment example; follow the actual board, tier and paper instructions rather than assume every task offers identical preparation or repetitions.
Prepare according to the actual task
Test a familiar-looking word against context
In ich bekomme ein Buch, bekomme means get/receive; sensibel means sensitive in a description of someone easily hurt. Es regnet, also bleibe ich zu Hause uses also as so/therefore; Chef means boss in the shop-manager model.
Helpful resemblance such as Musik/music is a clue, not proof of every word’s meaning. Cognates share origin, and their meanings can diverge; a word pair can have a shared history and still create a false-friend risk.
Check the proposed meaning
Check the full number, time and date
Siebzehn means 17, siebzig 70, einundzwanzig 21 and dreiundvierzig 43. Units precede tens in these ordinary 21–99 compounds; that is not a complete rule for every number.
Halb acht is 7:30, Viertel vor zehn 9:45 and Viertel nach drei 3:15, with morning/evening determined by context. Am dritten Mai is on 3 May; no year is supplied.
Read the full number and time
Follow the corrected detail in the original script
Optional teacher-read script: Wir fahren um siebzehn Uhr… nein, um siebzehn Uhr dreißig. Wir fahren nicht zum Museum, sondern zum Park. The final departure is 17:30 and the destination the park.
This is an original written script that a teacher may read aloud. With the text visible it is reading practice, not an attached recording or a measured listening result. The correction replaces the first proposed time.
Read the original teacher-read script
Read the whole tense construction
Gestern habe ich gespielt is perfect with past reference; morgen werde ich spielen active Futur I for the stated future plan. Es war toll describes an earlier scene in the supplied account.
Present forms can also have future reference, and wenn…dann does not itself create a future tense. Werden alone has other uses, so use the complete verb construction and time context rather than one isolated cue.
Use the complete construction
Match the response to the question
Comprehension asks for meaning in the instructed language/format. Dictation asks for the German words heard, so translating them into English would answer a different task. Translation requires equivalent meaning in the stated target language.
For true/false/not-mentioned practice, distinguish contradiction from silence. A text giving no ticket price does not prove that the ticket was free. These task types are practice examples rather than a promise that every paper uses all of them.
Match response to task
Translate naturally without losing evidence
Ich habe Hunger normally becomes I am hungry. Ich kaufe nichts can become I buy nothing or I do not buy anything. Keep the subject, time, quantity and negative meaning rather than copy every word literally.
Der Film ist ziemlich interessant can become the film is quite/fairly interesting. Read pronoun referents and separable verbs in full; one familiar word does not establish the whole sentence’s meaning.
Preserve meaning in natural English
Use compounds and unknown-word clues carefully
Hausaufgabe combines Haus and Aufgabe and conventionally means homework assignment. Bahnhof suggests a railway-related place through Bahn, but the full conventional meaning is railway station.
Use surrounding clauses, word families and part of speech to test an inference. A prefix or word part is a clue, not proof of an exact detail; keep uncertainty when the text does not support more.
Test an unknown-word inference
Separate the two original speakers
Mia: Gestern war ich im Park, aber nicht im Museum. Leon: Ich war am Morgen im Museum. Mia affirms the park and excludes the museum; Leon states the museum in the morning.
No ticket price or visit duration is supplied. Am Morgen means in the morning, whereas morgen in morgen fahre ich means tomorrow. Keep each speaker’s evidence separate and do not infer a price from silence.
Keep the two speakers separate
