La tienda, el mercado, el centro comercial, la librería, la carnicería and el supermercado name shopping places. Ir de compras means go shopping; hacer la compra often refers to routine groceries; mirar escaparates means window-shop.
Barato and caro describe price, de rebajas means in the sales and descuento discount. An invented price or sale phrase is language practice, not a real offer or proof of value.
Shopping vocabulary
Clothes: learn the article and number
El jersey, el vestido, la falda, la camisa, la camiseta, el abrigo, los zapatos and los vaqueros name clothes in this setting. Talla is clothing size; regional garment words can differ.
Quiero probarme este jersey means I want to try this jumper on. Me queda bien can mean it fits or suits me well; estos zapatos me quedan bien uses plural quedan with the plural garment, not with me.
Clothes and fit phrases
Services and a clearly stated problem
La oficina de correos is the post office; un sello can be a postage stamp there. El banco is the bank and sacar dinero del cajero automático means withdraw money from a cash machine in a language example.
Objetos perdidos identifies lost property in this setting. He perdido mi bolso. Es negro reports a lost black bag in an invented account; other objects need appropriate possessives, gender and description.
Services in a stated setting
Payment and price questions
¿Cuánto cuesta? asks how much a singular item costs; ¿cuánto cuestan? fits plural items. Pago con tarjeta and pago en efectivo describe paying by card or cash in the account.
El cambio is change returned after cash payment in this context. Incluido means included rather than free; an invented example gives no actual fees, refund rights or current prices.
Price and payment phrases
Demonstratives agree with the garment
Use este jersey, esta falda, estos zapatos and estas faldas for this/these. Use ese vestido, esa falda, esos zapatos and esas faldas for the ese set commonly rendered that/those.
Agreement follows the noun’s grammatical gender and number, not the wearer. Esto and eso are neuter pronouns; do not put them directly before a noun as if they were masculine singular determiners.
Demonstratives agree with nouns
Compare an identified item
Más barato que means cheaper than; menos caro que less expensive than; tan bonito como as pretty as. Keep adjective agreement and name or make clear what is being compared.
Este jersey es más barato que ese compares two masculine singular jumpers. Esta falda es menos cara que esa uses feminine agreement; the comparison does not itself prove equal quality.
Comparison patterns
Requests and attached pronouns
¿Podría ayudarme? uses conditional poder to soften a request addressed suitably to usted. Quisiera is an imperfect-subjunctive querer form used for I would like in a request; the two are not the same conjugation.
With el jersey, quisiera probármelo attaches me and lo to probar, with an accent preserving stress. With la falda use probármela. A polite form helps the request, while tone and context also matter.
A clear garment referent
A fictional purpose and dialogue
Ahorro parte de mi paga para comprar una bicicleta más adelante gives an invented saving purpose. Paga can be an allowance in this context or pay elsewhere; no personal amount or actual financial decision is required.
Cliente: Quisiera probarme este jersey. ¿Cuánto cuesta? Dependienta: Cuesta veinte euros. Cliente: Gracias, me queda bien. The invented turns show who asks and who answers; other coherent items and prices are valid.
