课程笔记

What is a Sentence?

  • A sentence is a group of words that tells a complete idea.
  • Every sentence has a subject (who or what the sentence is about) and a verb (what the subject does or is).
  • Example: "The dog barks." – The subject is "the dog," and the verb is "barks."
  • A sentence must make sense by itself.
  • There are four kinds of sentences: statements, questions, commands, and exclamations.

Four Types of Sentences

  • A statement tells something and ends with a period. Example: "The sun is hot."
  • A question asks something and ends with a question mark. Example: "Is it raining?"
  • A command tells someone to do something and often ends with a period. Example: "Close the door."
  • An exclamation shows strong feeling and ends with an exclamation mark. Example: "What a big dog!"
  • The type of sentence changes the punctuation at the end.

What is a Clause?

  • A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb.
  • A clause can be part of a sentence.
  • Example: "because it was raining" – this has a subject (it) and a verb (was raining).
  • Some clauses can stand alone as a sentence, and some cannot.
  • A simple sentence has just one clause.

Independent Clauses

  • An independent clause can stand alone as a complete sentence.
  • It has a subject and a verb and makes sense by itself.
  • Example: "I like ice cream." – This is an independent clause.
  • You can join two independent clauses with words like and, but, or, and so.
  • Example: "I like ice cream, but I don't like cake." – Two independent clauses joined by "but."

Dependent Clauses

  • A dependent clause cannot stand alone as a sentence.
  • It has a subject and a verb, but it does not make sense by itself.
  • Example: "when the bell rings" – This is a dependent clause.
  • It needs an independent clause to complete the idea.
  • Example: "When the bell rings, we go to lunch." – The dependent clause is "when the bell rings."

Subordinating Conjunctions

  • A subordinating conjunction is a word that starts a dependent clause.
  • Common ones are when, if, because, and although.
  • Example: "Because it was raining, we stayed inside." – "Because" starts the dependent clause.
  • These words show how the dependent clause is connected to the main idea.
  • When a dependent clause comes first, put a comma after it.

Fragments and Run-ons

  • A fragment is an incomplete sentence – it is missing a subject, a verb, or a complete idea.
  • Example: "Running to the store." – This is a fragment because it doesn't tell who is running.
  • To fix a fragment, add the missing part. Example: "She is running to the store."
  • A run-on sentence happens when two or more sentences are joined without proper punctuation or connecting words.
  • Example: "I like pizza I eat it every day." – This is a run-on.
  • Fix a run-on by using a period, a comma with a connecting word, or a semicolon.

Varying Sentence Length

  • Good writers use short sentences and long sentences to make their writing interesting.
  • Short sentences can create excitement or urgency. Example: "The door creaked. I froze."
  • Long sentences can add detail and description. Example: "The old house, with its creaky stairs and dusty windows, stood at the end of the lane."
  • Mixing sentence lengths makes your writing more fun to read.
  • Try to use a variety of sentence types and lengths in your own writing.
