Power takes different forms
Key ideas
Nature and perception: Storm on the Island develops an unseen threat; Exposure personifies hostile weather; the Prelude extract changes a boat journey into troubling awe. Examine how confidence or expectation changes.
Authority and control: Ozymandias sets a ruler’s lost dominance beside surviving art; London exposes suffering and constraint; My Last Duchess reveals a Duke’s possessiveness through a dramatic monologue. Tissue can question the apparent permanence of human systems through fragile material.
War and memory: The Charge of the Light Brigade honours soldiers while acknowledging a command failure. Bayonet Charge presents fear and disorientation. Remains and War Photographer examine the persistence of violent memories. Poppies explores separation through a mother’s voice without explicitly confirming her son’s death.
Identity and belonging: Checking Out Me History resists selective education. The Émigree develops an idealised remembered place under pressure; the location is not named. Kamikaze explores a returning pilot’s social rejection through a daughter’s reconstruction, leaving parts of his experience uncertain.

Writing about poems
Answer the comparison question with a precise connection and a meaningful difference. Use selected evidence to connect language, form and structure to interpretation. There is no required ideas-then-methods-then-effects paragraph order.
Use context where it explains a choice; distinguish the poet, speaker and subject. A poem can contain several concerns, and a symbolic or emotional reading needs local evidence. This overview does not replace study of all fifteen poems.
