The shape of a strong response

  • A strong response answers the question with supported interpretation and analysis of textual choices. Check which assessment objectives the particular task includes; context and technical accuracy are not awarded identically in every question.
  • A thesis is a working main argument. For example, Macbeth’s pursuit of power can be argued to threaten loyalty and moral restraint. Develop and qualify that claim through evidence rather than treating it as a proven universal message.

An optional paragraph aid

  • PEEL or PETAL can help organise thinking, but neither is compulsory. Point, evidence, analysis and connection are useful functions that can appear in different orders and lengths.
  • Evidence includes accurate quotations and precise references. Explain how language, form, structure, stagecraft or a narrative choice supports the interpretation.
  • A link need not repeat the question mechanically. It can develop a contrast, consequence or wider connection within the argument.

Building an argument

  • Develop the argument through relevant connections rather than listing events. Qualifying phrases can signal a reading’s limits, but a phrase alone does not supply analysis.
  • Explore alternatives when the wording or situation supports them. Do not invent ambiguity simply to meet an imagined top-band checklist.

Introduction and conclusion

  • A concise introduction can establish the working argument; a conclusion can draw together its implications. Neither needs a stock formula or new unsupported material. Use the literary present for analysis and appropriate past tense for historical facts.

Common errors

  • Avoid retelling in place of interpretation, unsupported technique labels, inaccurate quotations and drifting from the question. Quotation length or the absence of PEEL is not an error by itself.
