課程筆記

Subjects

  • Learn articles with subjects: le français, l’anglais, les maths, les sciences, l’histoire, la géographie, l’informatique, la musique and l’EPS. EPS abbreviates éducation physique et sportive. Le dessin means drawing; arts plastiques is broader art vocabulary.
  • Use J’aime l’histoire with its article. A subject word alone does not establish lesson content or availability in every school. Sciences can translate as science or the sciences, so both are legitimate English forms.

Opinions on subjects

  • Ma matière préférée est l’histoire uses feminine ma and préférée to agree with matière. Mon professeur est strict; ma professeure est stricte. Facile, difficile and utile keep the same singular form in these masculine and feminine examples.
  • J’aime l’histoire parce que c’est intéressant gives a general judgement. J’aime l’histoire parce qu’elle est intéressante refers directly to the feminine subject. The choice of construction affects agreement; a pupil’s preference is not a universal judgement.

Timetable and day

  • Les cours commencent à huit heures et demie: lessons begin at half past eight. Emploi du temps means timetable or schedule in a school context. La récréation is break/recess and la pause déjeuner the lunch break.
  • Original fictional Monday: maths 8 h 30–9 h 25; anglais 9 h 30–10 h 25; récréation 10 h 25–10 h 40; sciences 10 h 40–11 h 35. Break is fifteen minutes. Do not infer a whole school day or national schedule from these selected entries.

Rules and uniform

  • Il faut plus infinitive expresses necessity: Il faut être à l’heure. Il est interdit de plus infinitive expresses prohibition, with d’ before a vowel: Il est interdit d’utiliser son portable. These are example rules for language practice.
  • On ne doit pas utiliser son portable means one must not use a phone. Not having to do something uses a different construction, such as ne pas être obligé de. A uniform rule depends on the named school; an opinion that uniform helps equality does not prove an equal outcome.

Facilities

  • La salle de classe is the classroom; le gymnase the gym or sports hall; la bibliothèque the library; le labo the laboratory; la cour de récréation the playground; le terrain de sport the sports field. Une librairie instead means a bookshop.
  • Describe provided information with Il y a une bibliothèque. To express an ordinary absence use Il n’y a pas de piscine. A building word names a place, not a school subject or proof that every school contains it.

French and British schools

  • In France, collège comprises sixième, cinquième, quatrième and troisième, commonly around ages 11–15. General and technological lycée comprises seconde, première and terminale, commonly around ages 15–18. These are typical age ranges, not rigid boundaries for every learner.
  • Le bac means the baccalauréat, a qualification normally associated with the end of lycée; le brevet is associated with the end of collège. Routes differ, including vocational routes. Compare specific school texts rather than asserting that all French schools end later or have identical rules.

Pressures

  • Le stress, les examens and la pression describe stress, exams and pressure. In J’ai de bonnes notes, notes means marks or grades; the word can also refer to written or musical notes in other contexts. Un contrôle de maths is a maths test; contrôle has other checking meanings elsewhere.
  • Le harcèlement scolaire means school bullying. When reading Les contrôles me stressent, identify the stated source of stress without assuming all pupils feel the same. Examples are fictional and learners need not disclose private experiences.

Past and future

  • L’année dernière, j’ai étudié l’espagnol uses the perfect for a completed past experience. Demain, j’aurai un contrôle uses the future simple. Je vais passer mon brevet uses aller plus infinitive for a plan.
  • Passer un examen means take or sit an exam, not necessarily pass it successfully. Réussir un examen expresses success. A connected school account can combine a time, subject opinion with reason, example rule and past or future sentence; many valid details are possible.

Compare two fictional schools

  • Invented school A: Les cours finissent à 16 h et il faut porter un uniforme. Invented school B: Les cours finissent à 15 h et l’uniforme n’est pas obligatoire. Both are made-up reading examples, not descriptions of national systems.
  • A ends one hour later than B and requires uniform; B does not require it. Support a comparison with the stated evidence. The text does not establish canteen quality, teaching quality or what every school in a country does.
