Baroque: approximate wider context 1600–1750
- This lesson focuses on 1650–1910, within a wider historical periodisation. Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos, Handel’s Messiah and Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons illustrate different Baroque genres and purposes. Names and dates organise study but do not identify every feature of a passage.
- Basso continuo supplies a bass and harmonic foundation, realised by suitable keyboard, lute or harp instruments and sometimes reinforced by bass instruments. The group and chord realisation depend on context; a cello usually reinforces the bass line rather than playing the entire chordal part.
- Polyphonic or contrapuntal writing, ornamentation, concerto grosso contrasts and recurring bass patterns occur in relevant works. Melody with accompaniment also occurs. Terraced dynamics describes distinct dynamic changes but should not be taken as the only possible Baroque dynamic practice.
Continuo is a role, not one fixed instrument pair
Classical: approximate context 1750–1820
- Haydn and Mozart are central figures, with Beethoven’s work developing inherited forms in ways influential for later music. Common tendencies include melody with accompaniment, answering phrases, clear cadential relationships and developed instrumental forms. Imitation, counterpoint and irregular phrases also occur.
- Alberti bass specifically uses a low–high–middle–high broken-chord arrangement, not merely any broken chord. C3–G3–E3–G3 is a written C-major example in scientific pitch notation, with middle C named C4. The pattern is not restricted to one period.
- The standard string-quartet ensemble contains two violins, viola and cello. Symphony, sonata and quartet repertoire can have several movements with different forms. The fortepiano became important, alongside continued use of other instruments in particular contexts.

Romantic: approximate nineteenth-century context
- Chopin, Schumann, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Brahms and Wagner represent varied nineteenth-century practices. Some works explore chromatic harmony, extended forms, virtuoso performance, dramatic contrast or extra-musical associations. Chamber music, solo pieces, song and different orchestral sizes coexist.
- Programme music is instrumental music associated with a story, scene or idea. It was significant in Romantic repertoire but also existed earlier; music without a stated programme is not meaningless. A leitmotif is recurring associated material and can be transformed through a work.
- Rubato involves expressive flexibility in timing. Orchestral expansion in some works offered more timbral possibilities and related to instruments, institutions and resources. Neither larger forces nor constant dramatic intensity defines every Romantic work.

Forms and genres
- A concerto usually highlights a soloist or group in relation to an ensemble; a concerto grosso uses a small concertino group and larger ripieno group. A symphony, sonata or string quartet can be a multi-movement work, while sonata form describes a possible organisation of one movement.
- In a conventional sonata-form outline, an exposition presents tonal/thematic material, a development transforms or explores it, and a recapitulation returns and reworks it within a changed tonal relationship. Introductions, repeats, codas and other details vary. The outline is not a claim that every movement follows an identical plan.
- Nocturne, prelude, opera and tone poem describe different genres and purposes. A nocturne is often associated with night and lyrical piano writing, while preludes have several uses. Genre names should be connected to the particular work and context.
Work genre and movement form differ
Context
- Courts, churches, patrons, publishers, theatres and public audiences contributed to music-making across these periods in changing combinations. The independent composer and public concert did not suddenly replace every other funding model in the nineteenth century.
- Historical accounts should connect musical evidence to the specific composer, work, place, performers and audience. Traits overlap between periods, and period boundaries vary by source and region. The tables provide written concepts and contours, not full score excerpts or tests of recognition by ear.
