課程筆記
ATP
- ATP means adenosine triphosphate. ATP turnover immediately transfers energy for contraction, with ATP continually resynthesised from ADP and phosphate. Food fuels support this process; ATP is not simply a large stored food reserve.
- Phosphagen, glycolytic and oxidative pathways all support ATP supply, with relative contributions varying by demand and circumstances. Detailed ATP-PC mechanisms are extension where a GCSE board requires only broad aerobic and anaerobic distinctions.
Pathways support ATP resynthesis
Aerobic exercise
- Aerobic or oxidative metabolism uses oxygen and substrates including carbohydrate and fat to support ATP resynthesis. The simplified school glucose summary is glucose plus oxygen yielding carbon dioxide and water, with energy transferred. Energy is not a material chemical product.
- Predominantly aerobic work can continue at an appropriate demand while fuel and other conditions permit. Its ATP-supply rate is limited, and heat, fuel availability and fatigue still matter. Other pathways do not stop during a marathon, hill or surge.
Oxidative supply: rate and capacity
Anaerobic exercise
- Anaerobic ATP supply does not directly require oxygen within the pathway. It contributes rapidly when ATP demand is high, but does not mean the whole body is oxygen-free. The ATP-PC pathway and glycolysis have different substrates and mechanisms.
- Anaerobic glycolysis uses carbohydrate and can form lactate, often called lactic acid in school summaries. Very high output is limited by interacting substrate, metabolic, neural and contractile factors, not lactate alone. Pathways overlap instead of operating in fixed exclusive time slots.
Two rapid anaerobic contributions
The ATP-PC system
- The ATP-PC or phosphagen pathway uses phosphocreatine to help rapidly resynthesise ATP from ADP. It is important for brief explosive actions such as a throw, jump or sprint start, while other pathways also contribute. Direct stores and the achievable rate are limited.
- Recovery supports phosphocreatine restoration, drawing on oxidative processes. There is no universal exact second when this pathway stops and another takes over. This mechanism is extension for boards without detailed ATP-PC content, and does not imply a need for a supplement.
ATP-PC in a brief action
Lactic acid
- Lactate is formed during glycolytic metabolism and can be transported and used as fuel. Production can coexist with oxygen-supported metabolism. The GCSE term lactic acid is a simplified naming convention; it should not become a claim that lactate is only a harmful waste product.
- Fatigue has multiple interacting causes rather than one lactate poison. Lactate is processed after activity and is not trapped to cause next-day DOMS. Its presence alone does not prove no oxygen is available, nor does lowering it automatically prove complete recovery.
Lactate: avoid the false inference
Oxygen debt (EPOC)
- EPOC is excess post-exercise oxygen consumption above a resting baseline. It reflects several recovery processes, including phosphocreatine restoration, replenishing oxygen stores and continued elevated metabolic demands after strenuous activity. Oxygen debt is a simplified historical term, not an exact single-process account.
- The relevant quantity is oxygen use, not simply breathing rate. A specified time window and baseline are needed for a numerical excess. Do not claim it only removes lactic acid or exactly equals all oxygen that was missing during activity.
Post-exercise oxygen use
Linking to sport
- A sustained moderate marathon effort relies predominantly on oxidative supply overall, while brief maximal throws, lifts or sprints rely heavily on rapid anaerobic supply. Starts, surges and recovery change relative contributions, so no activity is literally one pathway only.
- Football and rugby vary between sustained movement, recovery and intense actions. Explain the specific action, intensity and duration rather than assigning one exclusive label to a whole sport or claiming only team games have mixed contributions.
Apply the demand, not an exclusive label
Recovery
- A suitable gradual cool-down can support transition towards rest and light active recovery may speed blood-lactate reduction in some settings. This does not prove less DOMS or better performance recovery, and continuing hard exercise can add demand.
- Recovery includes appropriate rest, food, fluid and adjustment to the preceding work and person. Symptoms and readiness matter more than a claim that lactate has instantly disappeared. The conceptual lesson does not prescribe a universal recovery session.
Recovery claims need limits
Calculate oxygen use above a baseline
- Fictional measured oxygen use over a five-minute recovery is 2.5 L. A stated constant resting rate of 0.3 L/min would use 1.5 L in the same five minutes. Excess over that assumed baseline is 2.5 minus 1.5 = 1.0 L.
- This is a specified-window EPOC calculation using original teaching values, not national or clinical reference data. Different windows and baselines change the result, and an elevated breathing rate by itself does not supply the oxygen-consumption measurement.
