What Section A asks
- Paper 3 is 1 hour 30 minutes, 50 marks: one Section A (extract) and one Section B (essay) question, 25 marks each.
- Section A prints an extract from your set text; you must re-read it before answering.
- Typical questions:×"In what ways does Brecht make this conversation such a memorable moment in the play?"×,×"How does Dangarembga make this moment in the novel so powerful?"×,×"Explore how Ibsen makes this such a powerful ending to the play."×
- For poetry, the extract is a whole poem:×"How does Szirtes make this such a striking poem?"×; for stories, often an opening:×"In what ways does Chaudhuri make this an interesting opening to the story?"×
- You may answer Section A and Section B on the same text or on two different set texts.
Timing
- About 45 minutes per section.
- Spend 8–10 minutes re-reading and annotating the extract and planning.
- Aim for 4–5 developed points that move through the extract.
- Keep a few minutes to check the answer stays on the question's key words.
Locate the extract
- Begin by placing the extract briefly: what has just happened, what follows — one or two sentences only.
- This shows whole-text knowledge (AO1) and explains why the moment matters (AO2).
- Example:×"Coming just after the orchard has been sold, this speech…"×.
- Do not narrate the rest of the text; the focus is the printed passage.
Work through the extract
- Move through the passage in order or by key idea — but cover the whole extract, especially the ending.
- Quote short phrases from the extract and analyse them closely: word choice, imagery, dialogue, sentence shape.
- For drama: stage directions, pauses, exits and entrances, what the audience sees and knows (dramatic irony), how tension builds.
- For prose: narrative voice, description, dialogue, pacing, what the narrator reveals or hides.
- For poetry: voice, imagery, form, structure, sound — as in unseen work.
The key words: memorable, powerful, striking
- The question's adjective is your thesis: explain why the moment is memorable, powerful or striking.
- Different reasons: tension, shock, humour mixed with sadness, a turning point, revelation of character, a symbol coming to a head.
- Keep evaluating:×"What makes this especially powerful is…"×.
- The adjective invites AO4: your judgement, supported by detail.
Context and wider text — lightly
- Link to the wider text only where it illuminates the extract (an echo, a contrast, a consequence).
- Context (historical, social, cultural) is useful when it explains characters' behaviour in the passage.
- The mark scheme rewards integrated textual reference, not information about the author's life.
- In a translated text, analyse images, dialogue and structure confidently; be careful with claims about single-word sounds.
The Paper 3 levels (out of 25)
- Level 6 (22–25): skilfully integrated, well-selected reference; sustained critical understanding; detailed response to the writer's effects; perceptive, evaluative personal response.
- Level 5 (18–21): much well-selected reference; clear understanding and some deeper meanings; developed response to effects.
- Level 4 (13–17): supporting reference; overall understanding; some response to language, structure and form.
- Level 3 (9–12): some reference, some understanding, straightforward comments on methods.
Pitfalls
- Summarising the extract instead of analysing it.
- Ignoring the ending of the passage.
- Writing mostly about other parts of the text.
- Feature-spotting without effect.
- Forgetting the question's key adjective.
