Introduction to Thermal Energy Transfer

  • Thermal energy is transferred from hotter objects to colder objects.
  • There are three ways thermal energy can be transferred: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction

  • Conduction occurs primarily in solids.
  • As particles in a solid are heated, they vibrate more and transfer vibrations through collisions.
  • Materials that conduct heat well are called conductors (e.g., metals).
  • Materials that do not conduct heat well are called insulators (e.g., plastics, gases).
  • Gases are good insulators because their particles are far apart.
  • Conduction is not possible through a vacuum because there are no particles.

Convection

  • Convection happens in liquids and gases.
  • Heated particles move faster, become less dense, and rise.
  • Cooler particles are more dense and sink, creating a convection current.
  • Example: In a pan on a stove, water at the bottom heats up, rises, cools at the top, and sinks.

Radiation

  • All objects emit infrared radiation (thermal radiation).
  • Infrared radiation is an electromagnetic wave and can travel through a vacuum.
  • This is how thermal energy reaches Earth from the Sun.
  • Matt black surfaces absorb the most infrared radiation.
  • Shiny silver surfaces reflect infrared radiation.

Particle arrangement in solids, liquids, and gases. Solids have closely packed vibrating particles (conduction), liquids and gases have particles that can move (convection).
