Notes de leçon

Key themes

  • Jekyll’s claim about being “truly two” raises division within the self, but he remains composite rather than purely good. The account also entertains more complex identities.
  • Reputation and respectability: Victorian society prized outward respectability. Jekyll hides his desires behind his status; Utterson avoids gossip and scandal.
  • Jekyll’s experiment and Lanyon’s response raise questions about scientific knowledge, secrecy and responsibility. Neither voice is a universal verdict on all science.
  • Good and evil: Hyde is presented as pure evil but also as part of Jekyll. Hyde's violence is brutal and unprovoked.
  • Secrecy and repression: doors, locked rooms and secret letters show hidden lives.

Language and imagery

  • Fog, streets, rooms and thresholds can create uncertain knowledge. Animal comparison can be read alongside cultural fears of degeneration, while remaining the language of the fiction rather than proof that anatomy reveals morality.
  • Observers report revulsion without specifying a clear malformation. Analyse the uncertainty and their assumptions; do not invent a definitive bodily defect for Hyde.
  • Pathetic fallacy attributes human feeling to nature. Atmosphere can also be created by literal weather, spatial contrasts and withheld information without that specific technique.

Structure

  • An anonymous third-person narrative mainly follows Utterson, then Lanyon and Jekyll supply first-person accounts. Utterson’s role is focalisation rather than first-person narration. The order of documents delays knowledge and invites the final explanation to be checked against earlier clues.
